Chris Pine Calls on Fans to Advocate for His Character’s Return in Disney’s Princess Diaries 3

Chris Pine, known for his role as Nicholas Devereaux in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, is just as surprised as fans about the possibility of his return in Princess Diaries 3. The third chapter of this cherished Disney series was officially announced by Variety and Anne Hathaway on October 4, but Pine remains in the dark about whether his character will play a part in it.

During an appearance on Today with Hoda & Jenna on October 8, Pine addressed the hosts’ queries regarding the eagerly awaited sequel. He remarked:

“I don’t know anything,”Pine confessed. “Call Disney! Call Bob Iger!”

His remarks have ignited speculation among fans about the continuation of Nicholas’s storyline, particularly considering the romance that blossomed between his character and Mia Thermopolis, portrayed by Anne Hathaway, which was hinted at the end of the second film.

Pine further added, “The answer is I’ve gotta see… I think it’s fantastic,”expressing his enthusiasm for a potential return, while stressing that Disney has yet to reach out to him.

Development of Princess Diaries 3 with a Fresh Creative Team

While Pine may be uncertain about his role, the development of The Princess Diaries 3 is progressing smoothly. Adele Lim, the screenwriter behind Crazy Rich Asians and director of Joyride, is set to helm the sequel, with Flora Greeson penning the script. Although detailed narratives are yet to be disclosed, the film is anticipated to follow the story from its predecessors instead of being a reboot.

“As a diehard fan of the original, I’m thrilled to take part in bringing the third installment of this beloved series to life,”Lim expressed in a statement.

She emphasized that the film will embrace themes of female empowerment, joy, and mentorship, resonating with the spirit that defined the original films.

Launching in 2001, the The Princess Diaries franchise introduced Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, a timid teenager who discovers her royal lineage as the heir to the Genovian throne. Hathaway has already confirmed her return as Mia for the upcoming third film, much to the delight of devoted fans.

In a video shared on Instagram on October 4, Hathaway expressed her excitement for the highly anticipated sequel, stating, “Miracles happen,”a nod to one of the unforgettable songs from the original film. The video included nostalgic highlights from The Princess Diaries, reminding fans of the franchise’s charming and heartfelt essence.

Previously, in an interview with V Magazine, Hathaway hinted at the film’s development, commenting:

“We’re in a good place. There’s nothing to announce yet, but we’re in a good place.”

Her remarks have sparked further speculation about the project, though no additional information has surfaced regarding other aspects apart from her involvement.

A pressing question regarding Princess Diaries 3 is whether Julie Andrews will return to reprise her iconic role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, Mia’s grandmother. In a December 2022 interview with Access Hollywood, Andrews expressed reservations about her potential return, indicating the long interval since the last films.

“I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible,”Andrews acknowledged, considering the challenges of stepping back into her character’s shoes nearly twenty years later.

Despite Andrews’ doubts, her absence from Princess Diaries 3 remains unconfirmed, leaving fans hopeful for her return to the beloved character.

For now, audiences will have to await official updates from Disney as the project unfolds, but Chris Pine’s remarks have undoubtedly piqued excitement for the next chapter in the Princess Diaries legacy.
