Chris Evans Makes Epic Return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Is Time Just a Circle?

The announcement of Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe elicited mixed reactions, leaving many saying, “Well, that’s unexpected.” This feeling resurfaced with the recent revelation that Chris Evans will reprise his role in the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday.

However, unlike Downey’s return, the specifics surrounding Evans’ role remain unclear. Recently, he made a brief appearance as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, serving as a nostalgic nod to the closure of the Fox universe. As for Avengers: Doomsday, it appears that Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson will continue to embody Captain America, whilst Evans could return as Steve Rogers, albeit without his iconic shield.

The prospect of this return is both exhilarating and perplexing. On one hand, the frequent reincarnations of characters in the comic realm makes such developments feel expected. On the other hand, it raises concerns of potential exploitation of nostalgia for financial gain. While the possibility of a simple cash grab lingers in the background, there remains a flicker of hope that Marvel is set to deliver something substantial. Following Downey’s casting reprisal, it seems logical that we might soon witness the return of other original Avengers who have departed or been written off.

Yet, these developments present a complex dilemma. The conclusion of Avengers: Endgame provided a fitting closure for Tony Stark, as well as a fulfilling arc for Steve Rogers, giving him a well-deserved ‘happy ending.’ The reintroduction of these iconic characters begs the question: what impact will their returns have on their narratives? It’s worth noting, however, that it’s likely that these versions of Steve Rogers and Tony Stark won’t be the same as the ones we’ve come to cherish. Still, the groundwork hints at potentially thrilling storytelling ahead.

This all seems especially relevant as we speculate about the forthcoming Secret Wars.

Our Heroes Back in Action Once Again

In the comics, Secret Wars revolves around the Beyonder, who brings together an eclectic mix of heroes and villains on a distant planet for epic battles. Although the exact storyline for the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains undisclosed, it is rumored that Avengers: Secret Wars will mark the climax of the “Multiverse Saga.” This could pave the way for alternate iterations of beloved characters to unite in confrontation.

According to a report from Deadline regarding Evan’s return, there is speculation about the potential revival of other fallen heroes. With the Russo Brothers set to return as directors, the possibilities appear endless. It would be intriguing to see Scarlett Johansson reprise her role as Natasha Romanoff and explore her dynamic with Florence Pugh’s Yelena. Likewise, seeing Pietro Maximoff back in action alongside Wanda would be a warmly welcomed surprise.

The potential directions for this storyline are abundant. While not every avenue may lead to favorable outcomes, my faith in Marvel assures me that if they managed to secure Downey and Evans for this project, something noteworthy is on the horizon. Until we find out who exactly Evans will portray, we can delve into comic history for clues. Now is an excellent time to revisit the lore of Secret Wars and engage in speculation!
