Derryth Bonecloak stands out as a particularly poignant character within the realm of Baldur’s Gate 3. As the owner of a struggling apothecary, she faces the daunting challenge of managing her shop alone, as her abusive husband has endured a traumatic brain injury that renders him unable to assist her. In the first act, players have the opportunity to extend a hand to Derryth by supplying her with Noblestalk, a highly sought-after mushroom that can aid her financially. Nonetheless, when players visit her shop in the lower city, they find her ambiance infused with an overwhelming sense of loneliness and dissatisfaction.
Fortunately, should her husband Baelen’s fate take a turn for the worse during his last venture into the Underdark, players can provide Derryth with a feline companion, courtesy of the stray cats inhabiting Baldur’s Gate. Numerous cats roam the lower city, but three in particular are noted as potential companions for this isolated dwarf. The question arises: which of these furry friends would prove to be the most compatible companion for Derryth?
Barsik’s Fanaticism Isn’t The Right Fit
This Cat Cleric Is Probably Not Right For Derryth
Encountering Barsik is a distinct experience; this delightful black-and-white cat is commonly found near Sorcerous Sundries, where he professes his devotion to the goddess Sharess. Initially, players might suspect that he has made an error similar to the kuo-toa of the Underdark, mistaking the name of the goddess Shar. However, it’s essential to recognize that Sharess is a legitimate deity within the Forgotten Realms, representing hedonism and sexual contentment. Barsik is characterized as a friendly cat, determined to fight against the Absolute in the name of his goddess, and he is amicable towards players regardless of whether they choose to align with him.
Despite Barsik’s charm, he is fundamentally at odds with Derryth’s cynical outlook on life. Her disillusionment with the world is unlikely to resonate well with Barsik’s fervent zeal. Barsik is better suited for a more open environment, perhaps preaching across the Wide, rather than being confined to the apothecary. Therefore, there are more suitable feline companions available for Derryth.
Malta Is An Independent Soul
A Mysterious Feline With A Quest Of His Own
Malta, an enigmatic orange cat, can be spotted roaming around the central wall of the lower city. His personality is quiet and aloof, making him a unique character. Engaging with Malta prompts dialogue reminiscent of noir-themed narratives, as he expresses his view of Baldur’s Gate as the “city of lies,”hinting at a deeper calling for justice. He presents players with somewhat of a challenge, showing disappointment towards those eager to befriend him. Among the feline choices, Malta stands out as the most cryptic, suggesting he may have his own agenda as he wanders the lower city.
While sending Malta to Derryth does elicit a positive reaction from him in subsequent dialogues, he remains an independent cat who values agency in forming his relationships. Thus, even if Malta would appreciate the gesture, he’s most likely to continue pursuing his own path, leading to the conclusion that there exists a cat more in need of the companionship that Derryth can offer.
Myshka Is Searching For A Family
Helping This Confused Cat Find A Home
Myshka emerges as the final option, perhaps the most appealing choice for Derryth. This little cat is already positioned close to her apothecary, searching for his mother. Upon interacting with him, players can assist in his quest by either claiming to be his parental figure or introducing him directly to Derryth, providing him with the familial bond he longs for.
If players choose to tell Myshka they are his mother, he will follow them around the city for a time, although he cannot join them at camp. He conveys a profound sense of loneliness and yearning for human connection. Regardless of the cat selected for Derryth, this small act of kindness is sure to uplift her spirits and alleviate her solitude. While this decision may not constitute an extensive quest within Baldur’s Gate 3, it exemplifies the game’s dedication to creating a vibrant, interconnected world.
