
Recent reports indicate a significant collaboration between leading Chinese memory producers, with YMTC—a prominent NAND flash manufacturer—joining forces with CXMT to advance high-bandwidth memory (HBM) production. This partnership particularly aims at the next-generation HBM3 technology and beyond.
YTMC Collaborates with CXMT: A New Era for HBM3 Technology
China is aggressively striving for self-sufficiency in various manufacturing sectors, including AI chips and essential components like semiconductors and HBM. In the realm of high-bandwidth memory, CXMT has established itself as a formidable player, currently mass-producing HBM2. A report from ZDNet Korea highlights that this partnership with YMTC is set to spearhead advancements in DRAM technologies that could significantly enhance HBM solutions.
As part of its strategy to enter the DRAM market, YMTC is preparing to invest in relevant technologies aimed at optimizing HBM production. Reports suggest that the company is on the verge of ordering DRAM research and development equipment and plans collaborative efforts with CXMT to accelerate their initiatives. Notably, CXMT is recognized as the largest DRAM producer in China and is rapidly progressing towards HBM3 capabilities.

Through this strategic alliance, YMTC anticipates leveraging hybrid bonding technologies developed by CXMT, which are essential for expediting the transition to DRAM-based HBM solutions. A critical focus of their collaboration is to enhance production capacity. YMTC, previously one of the leading NAND producers, had established a partnership with Samsung, indicating that it possesses the requisite technological prowess to address the region’s HBM production challenges.
This partnership poses potential competition to South Korean giants like Samsung. Despite having a lead in intellectual property and technology, they may find themselves impacted by the rapid developments of Chinese memory manufacturers. For now, establishing robust semiconductor and HBM production capabilities remains a central focus for China, especially in light of the country’s commitment to developing an indigenous AI technology ecosystem.
