Amid a burgeoning interest in domestic GPU solutions, two prominent Chinese manufacturers, Moore Threads and MetaX, are reportedly considering initial public offerings (IPOs).This move is seen as a strategic response to the shifting landscape of the GPU market, particularly following growing tensions and U. S.export restrictions.
Countering U. S.Sanctions: Chinese GPU Manufacturers Eye IPOs
As NVIDIA’s foothold in the Chinese GPU sector begins to wane, local players like Moore Threads and MetaX are gaining traction. A report from UDN indicates that these companies are preparing to launch IPOs on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, aiming to raise upwards of 12 billion yuan (approximately $1.65 billion). This funding will be crucial as they strive to establish viable alternatives amid increasing U. S.export barriers.
The prohibition on NVIDIA’s H20 AI accelerator in China has inadvertently paved the way for domestic GPU producers to introduce competitive products. Companies, including Huawei, Moore Threads, and others, have swiftly responded with solutions designed to meet local demand. Notably, Huawei’s Ascend AI chips have seen significant adoption among major tech players such as Tencent and Baidu. Meanwhile, Moore Threads has expanded its portfolio in the consumer GPU space with products like the MTT S80 and MTT S70, while also catering to professional needs with the MTT S4000 and S5000 offerings.

Interestingly, the leadership teams of both Moore Threads and MetaX boast impressive backgrounds, including former executives from industry leaders NVIDIA and AMD. Zhang Jianzhong, the CEO of Moore Threads, previously managed NVIDIA’s business operations in China, while MetaX’s CEO, Chen Weiliang, has extensive experience, having served as global general manager for several of AMD’s GPU design generations. This combined expertise provides both firms with a solid foundation, although substantial progress is still needed to match the research and development capabilities of NVIDIA and AMD.
Despite facing challenges due to U. S.sanctions, the current market scenario presents a unique opportunity for companies like Moore Threads to enhance their domestic offerings. This strategic pivot could potentially diminish NVIDIA and AMD’s hold over the Chinese GPU market.
