China Mobile Achieves Major Advances in 6G Deployment; Downloads a 50GB File in Just 1.4 Seconds, Surpassing 5G Performance

Experts anticipate the arrival of 6G connectivity by 2030, with the potential for deployment as early as 2028. To prepare for this new wireless standard, telecommunications companies in both China and the U. S.are currently engaged in extensive ‘trial and error’ testing, aimed at surpassing the capabilities of 5G connectivity. A remarkable feat was achieved by China Mobile, the largest wireless carrier in China, which demonstrated that it can download a 50GB file in just 1.4 seconds during a recent small-scale test.

China Mobile Launches the World’s First Small-Scale 6G Test Network

In a significant development, China Mobile has invested approximately 39.1 billion yuan (around $5.46 billion) in research and development. This investment culminated in a pivotal announcement at the 2025 China Internet Conference, where the carrier revealed its leadership in four crucial national scientific and technological initiatives. Furthermore, China Mobile is advancing the top ten innovations in 6G technology.

China Mobile’s pilot program has led to the establishment of the world’s first small-scale 6G network, which consists of ten dedicated research sites. In a recent demonstration, the network showcased astonishing speeds of 280Gbps—an impressive 14 times faster than what 5G can theoretically achieve. Such speeds translate to the capability of downloading a 50GB file in under 2 seconds, thereby eclipsing typical wired internet speeds.

This record-breaking download speed equates to transmitting a 2-hour 4K Blu-ray movie every two seconds. In addition to these advancements, China Mobile also launched the first satellite last February capable of transmitting high-speed data. Positioned at an orbit height of just 500 kilometers, this satellite optimizes data transfer to achieve lower latency compared to traditional satellites, which orbit at 36, 000 kilometers and struggle to match such performance.
