State Media Critiques NVIDIA’s H20 AI Chips: A Question of Safety and Environmental Impact
NVIDIA, also known as Team Green, has invested considerable effort in gaining approval for its AI chips to penetrate the Chinese market. Following extensive lobbying with the Trump administration, CEO Jensen Huang received a go-ahead just weeks prior. However, the situation has shifted dramatically following an investigation launched by a Chinese regulator into the security features of the H20 chips, particularly scrutinizing claims of potential backdoors that could compromise data security back in the United States.
According to a recent report from Reuters, China’s state-run media outlet CCTV has declared that the H20 chips are unsuitable for local AI applications due to alleged safety risks and environmental inadequacies.

This isn’t the first instance of resistance from China concerning NVIDIA’s H20 chips. The Cyberspace Administration of China has called upon NVIDIA to clarify claims regarding potential backdoors, which include features like surveillance capabilities and a “kill switch”function. While NVIDIA promptly countered these allegations through a blog post asserting that no such functionalities are integrated into their chips, skepticism remains prevalent in the Chinese media landscape.

It is crucial to understand that the Trump administration has not excluded the possibility of embedding backdoors in AI chips destined for China, which aligns with the government’s overall ‘AI action’ plan. Hence, dismissing the existence of these so-called backdoors remains complicated. Despite NVIDIA’s assurances that the current H20 AI chips are free from such mechanisms, the doubts linger.
If NVIDIA aims to make a significant impact in the Chinese AI market, addressing these concerns is essential. The company’s public relations teams are working diligently to navigate this complex landscape, but there is a palpable mistrust from local media and regulatory bodies, posing a challenge in gaining consumer confidence.
