Chiefs’ 2x Super Bowl-winning WR reveals he’s in conversation with Aaron Rodgers over Jets move in free agency
It is possible that former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marques Valdes-Scantling could reunite with his former quarterback Aaron Rodgers on the New York Jets. Despite being a two-time Super Bowl winner, Valdes-Scantling is currently a free agent and has not yet joined a new team in the NFL.
Valdes-Scantling was interviewed by Zach Gelb on “The Zach Gelb Show”this week and was questioned about whether the New York Jets had reached out to him during free agency. The 29-year-old declined to discuss his free agency status, but did mention that he had a conversation with Aaron Rodgers.
According to Marques Valdes-Scantling,
“Me and Aaron have talked. But that is a conversation for me and my agent to talk about. I don’t really want to talk about free agency stuff. I’ll let that handle itself.”
Valdes-Scantling and Rodgers were teammates for four seasons on the Green Bay Packers. However, in the past two seasons, Valdes-Scantling has been playing for the Kansas City Chiefs, where he has helped the team win back-to-back Super Bowls.
Where Marquez Valdes-Scantling fits on the Jets depth chart
It has been speculated that Marquez Valdes-Scantling would be a valuable addition to the New York Jets offense, providing another weapon for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Currently, the Jets’ top receiver is Garrett Wilson, who was chosen as the 10th overall pick in the 2022 Draft. Wilson has already surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first two seasons in the NFL, cementing his position as the team’s primary receiver.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s position on the depth chart could potentially be as a second or third wide receiver. Throughout his six-year NFL career, he has maintained an average of 17 yards per catch, accumulating a total of 3,155 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns.
Wilson would also benefit greatly from having him on his team, as his speed could be utilized to stretch the field and create openings for the young receiver.
After spending the past seven seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, veteran wide receiver Mike Williams recently signed a one-year contract with the New York Jets. While he is currently recovering from an ACL injury and his readiness for the start of the season is uncertain, Williams may potentially secure a spot as the second-string receiver on the depth chart.
Although Allen Lazard and Xavier Gipson are currently playing a recurring role in the Jets’ offense, the addition of Valdes-Scantling could potentially provide another big target for quarterback Aaron Rodgers due to their past connection.
