OpenAI Enhances ChatGPT with Beta Feature for macOS Developers

Recently, OpenAI introduced an innovative beta feature for the ChatGPT app on macOS designed to enhance the experience of developers seeking contextual answers. This functionality, dubbed “Work with Apps,”empowers ChatGPT to access and read content from various compatible applications, delivering tailored responses specifically for ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers.

Expanded Support for Developer Tools

Initially, the feature catered to a selection of five widely-used developer tools, including Xcode and Visual Studio Code. However, with the latest update, users can now benefit from support for a myriad of additional tools. As of today, the “Work with Apps”feature now includes the following applications:

  • Xcode
  • Visual Studio Code (VS Code)
  • VS Code derivatives, such as Code, Code Insiders, VSCodium, Cursor, and Windsurf
  • JetBrains IDEs, encompassing Android Studio, IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, PHPStorm, CLion, Rider, RubyMine, AppCode, GoLand, and DataGrip
  • Panic’s Nova (editor) & Prompt (Terminal)
  • TextMate
  • BBEdit
  • Terminal
  • iTerm

Utilizing the “Work with Apps”Feature

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how developers can leverage the “Work with Apps”feature in ChatGPT:

  1. Launch the desired compatible developer tool.
  2. Access ChatGPT, click on the “Work with Apps”button, and select your already opened application.
  3. A banner will appear above the chat bar displaying the name of the chosen app.
  4. When you enter a query, ChatGPT will enrich its response with relevant content from the selected app.
  5. If you have certain text highlighted in an editor, ChatGPT will focus its response based on that selection.
  6. For terminal applications, ChatGPT will retrieve the last 200 lines from open terminal panes.

Additional Features and Upcoming Plans

The recent update also enables users to utilize slash commands for speedy searches, activate the “o1-preview”model, and create images using the DALL·E functionality, making the ChatGPT experience even more versatile.

Looking ahead, OpenAI has plans to roll out the “Work with Apps”feature for Enterprise and Educational users in the forthcoming weeks. In addition, a similar functionality is set to be integrated into the ChatGPT app for Windows in the months to come.
