Charleston Open 2024 Day 4: Women’s singles predictions ft. Jessica Pegula vs Magda Linette
The Charleston Open, the biggest WTA tournament of the week, is still ongoing.
Despite reaching the semifinals of the Miami Open last week, Ekaterina Alexandrova was eliminated in the second round by Taylor Townsend. The only other seeded players to be knocked out so far are Dayana Yastremska, Madison Keys, and Lesia Tsurenko.
On Thursday, all of the second and third round matches will be finished, but Sofia Kenin and Caroline Wozniacki were unable to secure victories like Grand Slam champions Victoria Azarenka and Sloane Stephens did in their respective matches.
In addition, let’s take a glimpse at the forecasts for several important matches scheduled for Day 4 of the Charleston Open.
#1 – Naomi Osaka vs Iga Swiatek
Pegula, the top-seeded player, came back from losing a set to defeat her fellow American, Amanda Anisimova, with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the second round of the Charleston Open. In the first round, Linette ended her four-match losing streak by defeating Petra Martic 6-3, 6-4.
Despite a challenging start, she managed to defeat Dayana Yastremska in the second round with a score of 0-6, 6-4, 6-3. This victory has undoubtedly been the highlight of Linette’s season so far, as she achieved back-to-back wins for the first time this year. It is worth noting that Pegula had previously beaten the Pole in their only encounter at last year’s Miami Open.
Linette has a 4-23 record against top 10 opponents, giving Pegula an advantage in this match-up. Furthermore, all of her victories against top 10 players have been at major tournaments. As a result, it is anticipated that the American will advance through this match with ease.
Forecast champion : Jessica Pegula
#2 – Elina Svitolina vs Daria Saville: Clash of the Titans
Despite a strong start to the season, Svitolina has seen a decline in her momentum. She was the runner-up at the ASB Classic and advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open.
Despite reaching the third round of the Qatar Open and Indian Wells Open, Svitolina was eliminated in the second round of the Miami Open.
After a gap of over four years, the two are ready to resume their competitive relationship. Svitolina currently holds a 7-2 advantage over Saville in their head-to-head record. In their last meeting at the 2019 Wimbledon, the Ukrainian emerged victorious in straight sets, marking her sixth consecutive victory against the Australian.
Despite Saville winning their sole match on clay at the 2016 Madrid Open, this victory occurred before Svitolina solidified her position as a top player. While the Ukrainian is currently experiencing a decline in performance, she is expected to advance to the next round here.
Expected victor: Elina Svitolina
#3 – Emma Navarro and Jaqueline Cristian Face Off in Intense Match
Cristian began her journey at the Charleston Open by securing a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory over Katie Volynets in the second round. She also defeated Sachia Vickery in her first match, followed by a surprise upset against eighth seed Madison Keys, ultimately advancing to the third round of the tournament.
Despite only reaching the semifinals at the Transylvania Open, Cristian had yet to make a significant impact until her recent performance in Charleston. In contrast, Navarro has consistently performed strongly week after week, boasting an impressive record of 21-7 for the year. Considering their respective results, the American is expected to be favored in advancing further.
Projected champion: Emma Navarro
#4 – Daria Kasatkina vs Anhelina Kalinina: Clash of Rising Stars
Kasatkina defeated Ashlyn Krueger 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 in the second round of the Charleston Open, securing her spot in the third round. In another impressive match, Kalinina beat former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-2. This marked her second victory over the Dane in a matter of weeks, having previously defeated her at the Miami Open.
Despite Kalinina’s best efforts, Kasatkina maintains a 3-1 lead in their rivalry. Their most recent encounter at the Eastbourne International, which took place last year, resulted in a straight sets victory for the Russian. This will mark their first meeting on clay courts.
Both players are equally at ease on the court. Kasatkina has consistently performed well at the French Open, and she also achieved her first WTA title at the Charleston Open in 2017.
Despite her inconsistent performances this year, Kasatkina has had better results than her opponent. She was the runner-up at last year’s Italian Open and also reached the final in Budapest on the red clay. With her strong track record, the Russian has a high chance of continuing her success in Charleston.
Selection: Daria Kasatkina
