Charges Filed Against Your Name Producer for Child Prostitution and Obscene Acts

Summary of Charges Against Koichiro Ito

  • Anime producer Koichiro Ito is currently on trial, separate from the high-profile director Makoto Shinkai.
  • The prosecution is advocating for a six-year prison sentence, while Ito’s defense is requesting a suspended sentence.
  • Ito faces serious charges of indecency involving minors, with the sentencing hearing scheduled for February 28, 2025.

Anime producer Koichiro Ito is facing trial almost a year after his arrest, with significant ties to renowned director Makoto Shinkai, having produced works like Your Name, Suzume, and Weathering with You. Importantly, Shinkai is not implicated in this case.

The sentencing hearing is slated for February 28, 2025. Recent reports from Sankei reveal that Ito is charged under the Act on Child Prostitution, Child Pornography, and the Protection of Children, and faces accusations of “forced indecency,”a legal term under Japanese law for non-consensual or legally non-consensual obscene acts.

The prosecution is pushing for a six-year prison sentence, emphasizing the gravity of the offenses and the need for a strict punishment.

Defense Claims and Position

Conversely, Ito’s defense team is advocating for a suspended sentence—a legal option where the offender avoids immediate incarceration but must adhere to specific probationary terms. They do not refute the allegations. Instead, Ito’s legal counsel asserts he is undergoing counseling and remains under supervision.

A suspended sentence can be granted when a prison term does not exceed three years, with a fine cap at 500,000 yen, and applies mostly to first-time offenders. For those with prior convictions, eligibility requires a sentence of less than one year. As such, the six-year prison term sought by the prosecution could preclude Ito from qualifying for this option.

Context Surrounding the Case

Ito’s legal troubles commenced with his detention in February 2024, based on allegations of soliciting explicit images from a minor. Upon arrest, he confessed to paying a teenage girl for the photos. TBS News reported that the authorities discovered further incriminating material on Ito’s computer.

This case emerged from a separate investigation where Ito was suspected of compensating a 15-year-old girl for engaging in “obscene activities,”including sexual acts, while knowingly exploiting her underage status. There are also claims that Ito filmed these interactions.

He has been charged with crimes against three minors, with media coverage focusing primarily on two victims, while details related to the third remain undisclosed to protect their identities, as typically upheld in such cases. Under current laws, individuals under 18 are defined as “children.”

With the sentencing hearing approaching on February 28, 2025, the court will soon determine Ito’s fate based on the allegations and defense presented.

Following Ito’s arrest, Shinkai took to social media to address the situation:

First and foremost, I wish to express my deepest condolences to the victims. I sincerely apologize to those who support my work for any distress this has caused.

I believe this incident will not tarnish the value of our productions, yet I fully understand that it has led many to question their integrity. It fills me with sadness and frustration…
