Remembering Chance Perdomo’s Ambrose Spellman: A Reflection on the Actor’s Legacy

Chance Perdomo played the role of Ambrose Spellman, the warlock cousin from England, in all four seasons of Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. His character resides in Greendale, a fictional town situated on the opposite side of the Sweetwater River from the titular character.

Ambrose has been imprisoned in the Spellmans’ funeral home for 75 years due to a binding spell cast by the Witches Council. Prior to his confinement, Ambrose had experienced the loss of his father at the hands of witch hunters. This tragic event caused him to seek out a father figure for solace, leading him to constantly move from one university to another. Despite his tumultuous past, Ambrose has always had a talent for poetry and even published his first collection at the young age of 17.

He joined the ranks of a “young Crowley” , believed to be a nod to the renowned 19th-century occultist Aleister Crowley. In the show, Ambrose Spellman was arrested for his alleged participation in a plot to detonate the Vatican.

Despite his determination to remain loyal and protect his accomplices by not revealing their identities, the warlock was ultimately confined with a binding spell. He now works as a mortician at the Spellman Mortuary.

Ambrose’s character in the show experiences depression and feelings of loneliness, leading him to rely on jokes, sarcasm, and familial love as a way to cope.

Despite being portrayed as an older character in the show, Chance Perdomo’s Ambrose Spellman is depicted as a youthful, fit man in his twenties. He can frequently be seen strolling around the house in a silk robe and trousers, barefoot. On the rare occasions when he does leave the house, Ambrose opts for a shirt and velvet blazer paired with pants and Chelsea boots.

In Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Ambrose Spellman is portrayed as a clever and quick-witted character. He takes on the role of guiding his cousin Sabrina through various challenges. Although it is never explicitly stated, there is a strong bond between Sabrina and Ambrose, possibly due to a blood relation. Ambrose is not only Sabrina’s partner in mischief, but also the only one who knows about Sabrina Morningstar, a result of a time paradox caused by Sabrina Spellman.

The warlock possesses a wide range of powers and skills in witchcraft, such as necromancy, astral projection, exorcisms, atmokinesis, warding, containment, and remote teleportation.
