On September 16, 2024, Sean P. Diddy Combs was taken into custody, facing accusations of s*x trafficking, racketeering, and facilitating prostitution.
If convicted, the music industry giant could be sentenced to a maximum of 15 years behind bars. Diddy has strongly rejected all allegations and has reportedly entered a plea of not guilty.
Marc Agnifilo, Diddy’s legal representative, expressed his discontent regarding the indictment, labeling it as unfounded in a statement to US Weekly in September 2024:
“We are disheartened by the choice to pursue what we feel is an unwarranted prosecution against Mr. Combs by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.”
He further stated:
“Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is not only a music legend, a self-made entrepreneur, and a devoted family man, but also a philanthropy supporter who has dedicated 30 years to building a legacy, cherishing his children, and enhancing the Black community.”
The recent indictment of P. Diddy follows several assault-related lawsuits that have been lodged against him between November 2023 and September 2024.
The serious allegations surrounding the mogul have influenced several artists to distance themselves by altering their lyrics to eliminate references to him.
Kesha and Other Artists Who Modified Lyrics Mentioning P. Diddy
1) Kesha
Kesha introduced an adapted rendition of her famous track “Tik Tok”during her performance alongside Renee Rapp at Coachella in April 2024. Fans and the media quickly noted that she had changed the section that referenced Diddy.
The original lyrics, which debuted on August 7, 2009, were:
“Wake up in the mornin’ feelin’ like P. Diddy/ (Hey, what up, girl?)/ Grab my glasses, I’m out the door, I’m gonna hit this city (Let’s go).”
As reported by Newsweek Magazine on October 2, 2024, Kesha sang the modified version:
“Wake up in the morning like, ‘F*** P. Diddy.”
During this performance, Kesha and Renee Rapp raised their fingers, indicating their stance against Diddy. This lyrical change occurred in light of the raid on Diddy’s homes by Homeland Security in March 2024 along with the ongoing sexual assault allegations against him.
In August 2024, Kesha announced on her X account plans to re-record the song with the new lyrics.
2) Maren Morris
On September 19, 2024, Maren Morris followed Kesha’s lead by amending the lyrics of her hit song “Rich,”which initially contained Diddy’s name.
This country-pop track, released in June 2016 within her debut album HERO, features lines emphasizing Sean Diddy Combs’ affluence:
“Boy, I’d be rich, head to toe Prada/ Benz in the driveway, yacht in the water/ Vegas at the Mandarin, high roller gambling/ Me and Diddy drippin’ diamonds like Marilyn/ No, I wouldn’t be drowning in all your IOUs.”
During Maren’s performance at the Bourbon & Beyond Music Festival on September 19, 2024, she intentionally omitted references to the 54-year-old mogul from the lyrics.
This revised version emerged following the news of Diddy’s arrest on September 16, 2024. As reported by US Magazine on September 21, 2024, Morris shared a clip from her performance on her Instagram Story, captioning it, “F*** Diddy.”
3) Joe Jonas
After Joe Jonas performed with The Jonas Brothers on September 28, 2024, rumors spread that the 35-year-old artist had also dropped Diddy’s name from his popular song “Cake By The Ocean.”
This R&B hit, released in November 2016 on DNCE’s debut Extended Play, SWAAY, originally included references to Diddy:
“Walk for me, baby (Walk for me now)/ I’ll be Diddy, you’ll be Naomi, woah-oh/ Let’s lose our minds and go fu**in’ crazy/ I-I-I-I-I, I keep on hopin’ we’ll eat cake by the ocean, uh.”
The song typically refers to the connection between Diddy and Naomi Campbell during the early 2000s. However, during this performance, the lyrics were said to have been adjusted, sparking debates among fans regarding the new wording.
A report by US Weekly Magazine on October 1, 2024, indicated that footage from the concert at the LDC Arena in Paris was shared on social media platforms. Although the audio was muffled, some fans speculated that Joe had replaced Diddy with “Watts,”likely referencing actress Naomi Watts. Others believed he might have swapped it out for “Martin.”Notably, The Jonas Brothers performed the song without changes to Diddy’s name during earlier shows in London and Madrid that month.
On September 24, 2024, attorney Gloria Allred announced her representation of several individuals with claims against P. Diddy. In October 2024, the Buzbee law firm and AVA Law Group held a press conference revealing they would represent an additional 120 individuals who had stepped forward with accusations of sexual assault.
