The cause of death for rapper Fatman Scoop was disclosed nearly a month after his untimely passing. On Wednesday, September 25, a representative from the Connecticut Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Scoop died from heart disease.
Born Isaac Freeman III, the rapper was also diagnosed with hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, a chronic heart ailment characterized by plaque buildup in the artery walls, which can lead to serious health risks such as heart attacks, strokes, or aortic aneurysms.
Fatman Scoop collapsed onstage during a performance in Hamden, Connecticut, on August 30. He was immediately taken to a hospital after receiving CPR on stage. The following day, his family confirmed his passing via Instagram, stating:
“It is with profound sadness and very heavy hearts that we share news of the passing of the legendary and iconic FatMan Scoop. Last night, the world lost a radiant soul, a beacon of light on the stage and in life.”
Birch Michael, the rapper’s tour manager, also confirmed his death on Facebook, expressing that Scoop “taught [him] how to be the Man [he is] today.”
Tributes Honor Fatman Scoop Following His Death
A video allegedly capturing Fatman Scoop’s collapse during his Hamden performance spread widely online. In the footage recorded by an audience member, the rapper was seen energizing the crowd, exclaiming, “Let’s make some noise!”before retreating towards the DJ booth. He reportedly shouted, “I said Hamden, make some noise!”before climbing the stairs.
As he approached the DJ booth, his breathing appeared labored, and despite continuing to engage the audience, his speech began to slur before he collapsed, dropping the microphone in the process.
Paramedics quickly arrived on scene, and he was taken to the hospital shortly after, leaving his fellow performers and the audience in stunned silence.
Following the news of Fatman Scoop’s death, tributes began to emerge from the hip-hop community and fans. Missy Elliott, who collaborated with Freeman on her 2005 hit “Lose Control,”honored the late rapper on X, sharing prayers for his family and noting that Scoop’s “VOICE & energy have contributed to MANY songs that made the people feel HAPPY.”
Ciara, who also worked with Elliott and Fatman Scoop, shared a video of the iconic rapper on X, expressing her gratitude for having witnessed Scoop’s “greatness”and declaring him “one of the best voices in hip-hop.”
Ludacris paid tribute to Scoop on Instagram, stating that he regarded him as someone who “reminded you what the word LOVE truly means,”adding that anyone who met the rapper “felt that LOVE & PASSION.”
Questlove remembered the late rapper in a heartfelt Instagram tribute, describing him as the “embodiment of what hip-hop was truly about.”DJ D-Nice also shared his memories, reflecting on how the late rapper “was always kind to [him].”
