With the release of Season 2 of Castlevania Nocturne on Netflix, viewers were transported back to the tumultuous era of the French Revolution. Building upon the suspenseful finale of the first season, this installment introduced Alucard, the infamous Son of Dracula, and maintained a brisk narrative pace. Erzsebet Báthory’s formidable presence necessitated a united front; hence, Richter enlisted the aid of Maria, Annette, Juste, and Alucard in their fight against the powerful Vampire Goddess.
The climactic episodes delivered high-stakes confrontations with Erzsebet Báthory and Drolta, leading to a hard-won victory against the looming threat of eternal darkness. While Season 2 neatly wrapped up several character arcs, it intriguingly set the stage for a darker and more complex narrative in Season 3. For those who may have missed critical plot developments amid the action, here is a concise recap of the season’s conclusion.
The Rise of Elizabeth Bathory
The Fractured Soul of Sekhmet

As a vampire, Erzsebet was already a force to reckon with; her desire to revive Sekhmet by assimilating her powers drove her ambitions. Following Sekhmet’s demise, her essence was fragmented into three components: Ba (body), Ka (blood), and Akh, the benevolent aspect of her soul. Drolta’s scheming allowed Erzsebet to acquire two out of these three parts, Ba and Ka, but the elusive Akh remained beyond her grasp.
Fortunately, Annette established a crucial link with Sekhmet via Akh. Fueled by rage over Drolta’s betrayal, Sekhmet crossed over into the human realm, utilizing Annette as her vessel. Though Sekhmet (as Akh) was unable to battle Erzsebet directly, her mere presence disoriented the two absorbed parts of Sekhmet’s soul, leading to Erzsebet’s vulnerability. Taking advantage of this moment, Richter, Alucard, and Maria launched an all-out assault against the reigning Vampire goddess.
The A-Team vs. Elizabeth Bathory
The Power of Cooperation
Initially doubting his own abilities, Richter grappled with the knowledge that defeating Erzsebet Báthory was a monumental challenge. However, he soon recognized that he did not have to face this threat alone; Alucard, Maria, Juste, and Annette were steadfast companions ready to stand by him. Ultimately, the combined might of this diverse team was crucial in subduing Erzsebet Báthory and her minions. While Richter and Alucard launched physical strikes, Annette and Maria harnessed their magical talents to weaken their nemesis.

By the end of the season, Maria had mastered her ability to summon interdimensional beasts, including the fierce dragon responsible for Abbott’s demise, to unleash upon Erzsebet. Alongside this, Akh, having merged with Maria, impeded Erzsebet’s ability to harness her power. Despite the overwhelming strength of Erzsebet at this point, Richter and his allies succeeded in subjugating her until Drolta intervened—abducting Erzsebet and fleeing from the chaos.
Uncovering Drolta’s True Intentions
Betrayal at the Heart
Drolta’s unwavering loyalty to Erzsebet was evident throughout the season; she believed Erzsebet to be the ideal vessel for Sekhmet. After long centuries of service, Drolta had effectively nourished Sekhmet’s Ba and Ka for Erzsebet to consume. Yet, at the moment of Erzsebet’s impending defeat, Drolta made the decisive choice to betray her.
It became clear that Drolta’s allegiance had been a facade; she yearned to claim the role of Sekhmet’s vessel for herself. In the final moments, as Erzsebet lay weakened, Drolta drank her blood, culminating in Erzsebet’s demise.
“Why are you in this realm? You do not belong in that feeble mortal vessel.”- Erzsebet to Sekhmet (Akh)
With Ba and Ka coursing through her, Drolta gained a level of power surpassing that of Erzsebet. However, she failed to realize that Sekhmet would rise against her. Believing that Sekhmet sought to reclaim her presence among humans, Drolta was met with shocking disillusionment when Sekhmet (Akh) labeled her an “Unclean thing” during their confrontation, shaking Drolta’s resolve to continue fighting.
Richter’s Climactic Transformation
A Hero Emerges

As Drolta weakened, Sekhmet (Akh) approached to reclaim the two portions of her fragmented soul. However, a critical condition arose: the three fragments of Sekhmet’s essence needed to merge within Annette’s form. Unfortunately, this would be fatal for her, ensuring that her soul would remain trapped in the other realm without hope of return.
Even faced with the potential loss of Annette, Richter ultimately chose to allow Sekhmet (Akh) to absorb Ba and Ka from Drolta. Cradling Annette’s limp body, Richter professed his love, compelling Annette to summon her inner strength and break free from the other-dimensional beast to return to her own body.
“But now, I can’t imagine the world without you, Annette. Any of it.”- Richter
Richter had struggled with his identity and the legacy of the Belmont name, haunted by the trauma of losing his mother. However, through Annette, he finally discovered his true purpose. In a moment marked by fury and desperation, Richter wielded Alucard’s sword and amplified its magic, gaining a substantial increase in both strength and speed. Instead of the assistive role he had occupied previously, Richter took the lead, decisively vanquishing Drolta once and for all.
A Foreboding Future: The Stage is Set for Season 3
The Final Mystery
The most intriguing element during Season 2 was undoubtedly the enigmatic figure of the “Old Man Coyote,” a character reminiscent of the Grim Reaper from folklore. Observing from the shadows, he was seen dragging Abbott’s remains and persistently following Tera and Maria throughout the series. His appearance in the finale—standing behind Tera with a cryptic smile—implies that he holds some ulterior motives for the mother-daughter duo.

In Season 2, Maria temporarily strayed from her path, harnessing her abilities to extract vengeance on Abbott, and showcased her uniqueness in bridging dimensions. The Old Man Coyote’s intent may involve leveraging Maria and Tera for his obscure plans in the human realm. Alternatively, his goal may be to exploit Maria’s potential to dismantle dimensional barriers, threatening human existence. Regardless, it’s clear that both the Grim Reaper figure and the dynamic between Tera and Maria will play pivotal roles in the unfolding narrative of Season 3, leaving fans eager for answers.
