Casey White and Vicky White: A Fact Check on the Murder Allegation – Insights from Netflix’s ‘Jailbreak: Love on the Run’
Netflix’s Jailbreak: Love on the Run delves into the gripping romantic connection between correctional officer Vicky White and inmate Casey White (despite sharing a last name, they are not related). This dramatic tale resulted in one of the most notorious manhunts in recent times. Unlike Netflix’s typical multi-episode crime documentaries, this film presents a comprehensive true-crime narrative that tragically culminated in Vicky White’s death.
Vicky White died while evading authorities alongside Casey, prompting a dramatic police pursuit. This chase concluded when their vehicle crashed into a ditch, where Vicky was discovered with a gunshot wound to the back of her head. Despite Casey being the only person present, law enforcement determined she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, leaving uncertainties about whether this was accidental or intentional.
Reports indicate that Casey White repeatedly implored police to assist his “wife,”who was injured, yet they had no legal marriage. Despite prompt medical attention, Vicky White succumbed to her injuries. Initially, Casey was suspected of her murder; however, the case was eventually dropped after he entered a plea deal for first-degree prison escape.
Who was Vicky White and what did she do?
Born on August 19, 1965, in Alabama, Vicky White grew up in a nurturing environment with two brothers that fostered her independence and resilience. Known for her positive outlook, she was well-liked by those around her.
Vicky married Thomas Edward White in 2002, but the union ended in divorce just four years later. In 2006, she began her tenure at the Lauderdale County Detention Center, earning admiration for her work ethic over the next several years.
In 2020, Vicky’s life took a turn when she met Casey White, a newly transferred inmate facing serious capital murder allegations. A seasoned criminal, Casey previously had multiple charges and was already incarcerated when he caught Vicky’s attention.
Their illicit relationship blossomed over two years, during which Vicky allegedly facilitated Casey’s requests, including smuggling him a burner phone.
In 2022, Vicky announced her retirement from her job and sold her house in Lexington, Alabama, for a mere $95,000, well below the market value.
On April 29, 2022, Vicky took Casey White out of prison by falsely claiming he had a court hearing for a mental health evaluation. Given her longstanding reputation, no one doubted her motives. The two vanished for the next ten days.
How did Vicky White die?
After an extensive 11-day manhunt, where the pair changed locations and vehicles to evade capture, law enforcement located them on May 9, 2022. The pursuit escalated as they traveled along US 41, closely followed by numerous police vehicles.
The chase ended in chaos when their car crashed into a ditch. While Casey White suffered only minor injuries as officers pulled him from the wreck, he repeatedly urged them to assist his “wife,”who had reportedly shot herself. Vicky was discovered with a gunshot wound to her head.
Although Vicky received immediate medical care, she did not survive. Prior to her death, she faced charges for facilitating escape and several lesser offenses.
Meanwhile, Casey was apprehended and charged with first-degree escape, alongside charges related to Vicky’s death, though he was not charged with her shooting.
