The Journey of Casey Hudson and Humanoid Studios

Casey Hudson, renowned for his pivotal role as the director of the iconic Mass Effect trilogy at BioWare, has had a noteworthy career spanning nearly 20 years at the studio. After returning for a brief period during the development of Anthem, Hudson departed in 2020, expressing a desire to explore his “creative passion through more personal work.”

In 2021, Hudson took a significant step towards this goal by founding Humanoid Studios, a fresh game development venture based in Canada. The studio was already at work on an undisclosed project, exciting anticipation among fans and industry observers alike.

Challenges Faced by Humanoid Studios

Tragically, the excitement soon turned to disappointment as Humanoid Studios announced its closure due to financial constraints. A recent post on LinkedIn confirmed this development, stating, “Earlier today, we informed our staff that Humanoid Origin will be shutting down. Despite efforts to shield the studio from broader challenges in the industry, an unexpected shortfall of funding left us unable to sustain operations.”

The studio’s communication also reflected a sense of pride in the team’s achievements, highlighting their commitment to creativity and collaboration. “In our time together, the team achieved incredible progress and demonstrated that it’s possible to do amazing work while fostering a culture of fun and creativity. We thank them for their talent, courage, and friendship,” the message expressed. They also extended gratitude to supporters during their journey.

The Unrevealed Game Project

While much remains under wraps regarding the anticipated game, the developer’s website currently in operation reveals some intriguing details. The game was intended to be a “multi-platform AAA title focused on character-driven narrative in an all-new science fiction universe,” developed by a team of industry veterans. This premise certainly hinted at an experience that would resonate with fans of the Mass Effect series.

In a parallel development, BioWare is actively working on the next installment of the Mass Effect saga, led by director Michael Gamble, ensuring that the legacy of the series continues to evolve.
