Caroline Wozniacki crossed paths with Monica Puig at the Credit One Charleston Open. The Danish player is scheduled to begin her journey at the WTA 500 tournament in the Round of 64 against Mccartney Kessler.
Wozniacki’s participation in the Credit One Charleston Open comes after her early elimination in the Round-of-64 at the Miami Open. Despite winning her first-round match against Clara Burel, the former World No. 1 was unable to continue her momentum and was defeated by Anhelina Kalinina in the following round.
Despite her successful career as an Olympic gold medalist, Puig retired from tennis in June 2022. Her accomplishments include winning two singles titles on the WTA Tour and reaching a career-high ranking of World No. 27 in September 2016. Following her retirement, Puig has been working as a commentator and analyst for various networks, including Tennis Channel.
The Credit One Charleston Open’s official social media page captured a heartwarming moment when Wozniacki and Puig unexpectedly met and shared a joyful moment. Puig also posted the same moment on her verified Instagram account with the accompanying caption:
“Always a good laugh with @carowozniacki”
Afterwards, Wozniacki personally posted the same content on her Instagram account.
The Controversial Match Between Caroline Wozniacki and Monica Puig at the Miami Open
Despite dominating the first set with a 6-0 lead, Caroline Wozniacki ultimately lost the match against Monica Puig in the second round of the 2018 Miami Open.
Following the incident, Wozniacki took to social media and stated that her family had been threatened by some spectators in the audience.
“During the match last night, people in the crowd threatened my family, wished death upon my mom and dad, called me names that I can’t repeat here and told my fiance’s niece and nephew (who are 10 years old) to shut the f**k up, meanwhile security and staff did nothing to prevent this and even accepted this to take place,”the Dane wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Puig was later asked if she had heard the threats. In response, the Puerto Rican stated that she had not heard anything.
“I didn’t hear anything. The crowd was very emotional and very excited the previous night. But I can’t say. I didn’t hear anything,”Puig said (via Express).
Puig would ultimately advance to the Round of 16, where she was ultimately defeated by Danielle Collins, the eventual 2024 Miami Open women’s singles champion.
