The forthcoming episode of NBC’s Dateline will delve into the tragic murders of three individuals, including Carol Marlin and Margaret Ginn. Margaret was an unfortunate casualty, caught in circumstances beyond her control. The real target was Carol Marlin, who was killed by her husband, John Peek, solely for the benefit of her life insurance policy. Remarkably, Peek repeated this heinous act years later, taking the life of his second wife, Kasi Peek.

Who were Carol Marlin and Margaret Ginn and what transpired?

Carol Marlin, 46, was living in Marietta, Georgia, and was employed at the well-known company Lockheed Martin. Her common-law spouse, John Peek, also worked in the IT department at Lockheed Martin. Carol’s seemingly ordinary life took a fatal turn during an outing with her colleague, Margaret Ginn.

Margaret Ginn, born on April 4, 1932, in Georgia, had a more extensive life experience than Carol. She grew up in a nurturing environment and was previously married to Thomas Eugene Ginn until becoming a widow in 1985. Margaret had a son named Russell Sterling Ginn.

On June 13, 1996, Carol and Margaret planned to dine out together. That evening, it was John Peek who reported Carol missing. As the search unfolded, authorities discovered both women dead at Margaret Ginn’s residence.

The cause of death for both victims was blunt force trauma to the head. Carol’s condition was notably severe, prompting investigators to suspect that someone harbored a deep-seated grudge against her.

The police investigation rapidly focused on John Peek. He denied any issues in their marriage; however, compelling evidence emerged against him, including a major red flag: just two weeks before the murders, he had changed the beneficiary of Carol’s life insurance policy to himself.

Additionally, Barry Webb, a coworker of Marlin, dialed 911 to report an intruder, allegedly identifying John Peek as that intruder. Despite these alarming indicators, no direct physical evidence linked Peek to the crime, allowing the case to grow cold, and no arrest was made at that time.

Was John Peek apprehended?

John Peek was eventually arrested following another murder he committed. In October 2005, Peek took the life of his 44-year-old wife, Kasi Peek. While he did not confess to this murder either, the authorities realized he had intended to collect on Kasi’s life insurance policy, which led to his arrest.

Upon his capture, Peek pleaded guilty to the murders of all three victims, resulting in three concurrent life sentences. He is currently incarcerated at Wilcox State Prison in Abbeville, Georgia.
