For enthusiasts of vintage photography, VSCO has recently launched a remarkable new application called Capture. This innovative tool allows users to take photos that exude an analog aesthetic instantly, eliminating the need for post-processing. Users can simply select from a variety of presets, make necessary adjustments, and capture their images right away. Here’s how to get started with this exciting app.
Availability of VSCO’s Capture App
Initially, Capture was only accessible in Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. However, as of early this month, VSCO has expanded its reach, making the app available globally.
Currently, Capture is exclusively offered for iPhone users via the App Store. Android users will need to be patient, as a version for their devices is expected to be released soon.
To get started with Capture, users must create an account. If you are already using VSCO, we recommend logging into Capture with the same account to streamline your experience.
Capturing Analog Photos with the Capture App
You might be asking yourself, isn’t it possible to take analog-style photos using the regular VSCO app? Indeed, it is; however, Capture brings a host of unique features.
Unlike the traditional VSCO app, which allows you to add filters post-capture, Capture provides a vast selection of retro filters that can be applied before taking your shot. Users can also fine-tune settings and see live changes in real-time before snapping the photo, and the best part is that all these presets are completely free.
To take a photo with Capture, launch the app and select the Preset button at the bottom of the interface.

Once the presets are displayed, swipe left or right to explore the various options. Tap on a filter to apply it and view how it transforms your composition.

Before you hit the shutter button, remember to select the image format for your photo — options include HEIC, JPEG, or RAW (depending on the iPhone model). When using the 48MP sensor, you’ll only be able to shoot in HEIC or JPEG.

Customizing Your Presets
One of the standout features of the Capture app is its flexibility in preset customization. Users are not limited to the default settings, which operate in Auto mode. You can easily switch to manual mode by tapping the M button located in the lower right corner.

In this manual mode, you can adjust several parameters including:
- Toggle flash on and off
- Aperture settings for depth of field adjustments
- Exposure Compensation for controlling brightness
- Bloom effects to soften bright areas
- Halation for glowing light points
Additionally, users can modify a filter’s intensity by pressing on it twice and adjusting to their liking.

Enhancing Images with Advanced Editing
After capturing your images with Capture, you have the option to perform further edits in the VSCO app, provided you have it installed.
To access your gallery, simply click on the thumbnail located in the upper right corner of the Capture app.

Select the image you wish to edit and tap on the Edit image option.

However, it’s essential to note that images taken with certain Capture presets cannot be edited in VSCO without a paid subscription.

Once edited, your images are stored in VSCO’s Studio space. You also have the choice to directly Post to VSCO right from the Capture app.

Your uploaded images will appear on your VSCO profile, allowing others to interact through comments and shares.

While the Capture app offers a fantastic platform for analog-style photography, those looking for a wider array of editing possibilities may explore alternatives that also replicate a film look. For more options, consider checking other noteworthy iOS photo-editing applications available here.
