Captain America: Brave New World is poised to significantly impact the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) by introducing Adamantium, a robust metal alloy that holds great significance in the comic book world. Directed by Julius Onah, this fourth installment in the Captain America series is notable for various reasons including being the first solo film starring Sam Wilson as Captain America. It will also mark the premiere of the Red Hulk and the Serpent Society within the MCU. However, the introduction of Adamantium could prove to be the most pivotal development for the franchise’s future.
This upcoming film takes a creative approach by reimagining the origins of Adamantium. Instead of its traditional comic book backstory, the alloy will be sourced from a decayed celestial being protruding from the Earth’s surface. A recent promotional clip features President Thunderbolt Ross referring to this discovery as the “discovery of the millennium.”This revelation sets off a geopolitical crisis as countries strive to control this invaluable resource. Onah confirmed in an exclusive interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley that Adamantium is anticipated to lead to Wolverine’s story arc, enhancing its importance in the broader MCU narrative.
Adamantium is much more durable. Adamantium is not like Vibranium, which can absorb kinetic energy. Adamantium, as we know, will eventually be a part of Project X. It will eventually be part of the story of Wolverine. So Adamantium now becomes this resource that could change the world in a way that’s very different because Vibranium is something that is really under the purview of the Wakandans. This is why it becomes an amazing geopolitical football in our film.
But also what’s so great about the MCU is it’s an opportunity to take things that are iconic from publishing and find a way to reimagine them for this universe in a way that could be really exciting. And because we haven’t had mutants in the past, because we haven’t had Adamantium, it became such a fun way to surprise audiences with a new sort of vision of what it could be. And I’m just still pinching myself that I get to have the movie that introduces Red Hulk, that introduces Adamantium, that introduces the Serpent Society. It is fun for me as a geek, and I think it’s going to be a blast for all audiences when they go see this movie.
The Significance of Adamantium in the MCU
It’s essential to recognize that Onah is not currently involved in any specific MCU X-Men projects. His insights are informed by the established lore in the Marvel Comics universe; he speculates that Adamantium’s introduction will eventually lead to a story centered on Wolverine. If Onah’s predictions materialize, it could have sizeable implications for the character. Until now, the character of Logan has not had his skeleton fused with Adamantium as part of the infamous Weapon X program.
It is plausible that Logan continues to exist within the MCU minus the Adamantium, akin to his early portrayal in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Furthermore, Weapon X is responsible for not just Wolverine but also other notable characters like Sabretooth and Deadpool, as well as powerful figures such as Lady Deathstrike and X-23. Although Adamantium is chiefly linked with Wolverine, numerous Marvel characters will undoubtedly be influenced by this alloy’s introduction.
Implications of Adamantium’s Introduction in the MCU
Onah’s remarks suggest that Adamantium marks the inception of the MCU’s long-awaited Mutant Saga. While the franchise has teased mutant characters through figures like Ms. Marvel and Namor, Adamantium signifies the commencement of a narrative directly connected to X-Men lore. The ramifications are expected to extend beyond the X-Men, ushering in a new era for the MCU following the events of Avengers: Secret Wars. Observing how Captain America: Brave New World introduces Adamantium will be vital in understanding its influence on the Marvel universe.
