Can You Play as John Marston in Red Dead Redemption 2?

Players can look forward to the PC launch of Red Dead Redemption, set for October 29, 2024, as announced by Rockstar earlier this month. John Marston, one of the most iconic characters in video game history, plays a significant role in the original title and appears in its prequel, although his playable time is fairly limited in the latter.

Set in the Wild West during 1911, the original Red Dead Redemption precedes its sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, which is set in 1899. This chronological twist may surprise newcomers to the franchise, but it has been a beneficial design choice for the developers, making a 2024 playthrough of RDR1 enticing for many.

When engaging with these titles as intended by Rockstar, players will step into the shoes of a 38-year-old John Marston. As a former outlaw, his quest involves assisting the government in dismantling the notorious Dutch van der Linde’s gang, with which he previously affiliated. Tragically, the character’s journey concludes in his death at the game’s end, which led fans to believe he would not return as a playable figure in the sequel.

Despite this belief, Red Dead Redemption 2 unfolds several years before the events of the first game, allowing John Marston to appear as a prominent secondary character. During gameplay, players assume the role of Arthur Morgan, with John, now a 26-year-old outlaw, exhibiting a somewhat less mature demeanor compared to his elder self in RDR.

The epilogue of Red Dead Redemption 2 is the sole opportunity to play as John Marston, offering a glimpse into his redemption arc following Arthur’s demise. In this section, he seeks a new path, taking on work as a farmhand and reflecting the maturity that defined his character in the original game.

This final chapter in RDR2 serves to tie together the narrative threads and clarify the timeline Rockstar Games intended to illustrate.
