Cam Sutton arrest update: Ex-Lions CB turns himself in on domestic battery, weeks after being on the run
Upon the issuance of an arrest warrant for alleged domestic violence, former Detroit Lions cornerback Cam Sutton voluntarily surrendered himself at Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office’s Orient Road Jail.
The HCSO Sheriff account shared a brief, 14-second video of Sutton’s booking while he was in handcuffs. The clip was also retweeted by other accounts related to football, such as JPA Football.
The Sheriff’s Office located in Tampa has released a warrant for Sutton’s arrest in connection to an alleged case of domestic battery by strangulation that took place in Lutz, Florida on Mar. 7. According to Florida state laws, this offense is classified as a third-degree felony.
During the annual NFL owners meeting, Lions president Rod Wood informed SI.com’s Christian Booher that Sutton was present at the team’s practice facility in Allen Park when the Sheriff’s Office released the warrant.
Ever since, Cam Sutton has remained elusive to the authorities. To make matters worse, the Lions decided to let him go despite his $10.5 million salary for the upcoming season. This would have been the second year of his three-year, $33 million contract with the NFC North team that he signed during the 2023 offseason.
ESPN reported that Sutton allegedly assaulted a woman and then fled the scene. The HCSO released his warrant two weeks later, which stated:
“The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office needs your assistance in locating a wanted subject: Cameron Sutton, 29. He is wanted for Aggravated Battery – Domestic Violence. He may be driving a Jeep Grand Wagoneer with a plate number of FL-AZ33QB.”
After exhausting all methods of contacting him, an HCSO spokesperson stated in an interview with MLive that they released Cam Sutton’s arrest warrant.
“He’s been ducking us. Our deputies have exhausted all leads. He’s got vehicles and a home nearby, and he hasn’t been there. He’s turned off his phone.”
In light of the potential consequences that Sutton may face if found guilty, the website of the Flaherty and Merrifield law firm stated:
“Under Florida Statute 784.041, Domestic Battery by strangulation is classified as a third-degree felony. Those convicted of this crime will face punishment of up to 5 years imprisonment or probation, and a $5,000 fine.”
