Call of Duty Leak Reveals Unfinished Collaboration with Halo

Overview

  • Reports suggest that Microsoft intervened to halt a potential collaboration between Halo and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
  • Sledgehammer Games was rumored to plan the introduction of Halo-themed maps into Modern Warfare 3.
  • The Call of Duty series often engages in crossovers with various other franchises.

Recent leaks have indicated that a highly anticipated partnership between Halo and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was nearly realized. This collaboration could have ushered in a wealth of content from the Halo universe into the Call of Duty franchise.

Both Halo and Call of Duty stand as iconic names in the first-person shooter (FPS) genre. While Call of Duty currently enjoys greater popularity, Halo maintains significant legacy appeal among gamers. Following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023, the ownership of both franchises suggests that a partnership would be logistically feasible.

According to a source familiar with the matter, known as TheGhostOfHope on X, Sledgehammer Games had envisioned an extensive Halo collaboration for Modern Warfare 3. This initiative would have included an array of maps drawn from the Halo franchise. Although specific maps were not detailed, an accompanying image featured Halo 3’s renowned map, The Pit, which could potentially be adapted into a thrilling small-scale multiplayer arena for Call of Duty. However, TheGhostOfHope speculates that Microsoft ultimately rejected this idea, influenced by previous interventions, particularly when a proposed Halo and Doom crossover was brought forward.

Microsoft’s Intervention in Halo x Call of Duty Collaboration

Though the notion of a Halo collaboration may seem unconventional at first, in the current landscape of gaming, it feels increasingly plausible. The traditional image of Call of Duty as a purely military shooter has evolved, with the franchise now featuring numerous purchasable cosmetic items and frequent collaborations with diverse franchises. This shift is evident in the ongoing game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and was also true for Modern Warfare 3. A striking example of this evolution was the addition of Terrifier’s Art the Clown as a playable operator. While Microsoft may have dismissed the Halo collaboration for now, the possibility of revisiting this idea in the future remains open.

Although Activision has moved on from actively supporting Modern Warfare 3, excitement surrounding the franchise continues with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. This latest installment has seen consistent updates, including various crossovers and collaborations. A notable highlight was the introduction of a Squid Game themed Premium Battle Pass. Recently, Treyarch unveiled the Season 2 Patch Notes for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, providing players with insights into what’s to come in this exciting new season.
