On October 25, 2024, Beyoncé made an appearance at a rally supporting Kamala Harris in Houston, Texas. Prior to the event, speculation circulated about a potential performance from the iconic singer. However, attendees were greeted instead with a heartfelt speech delivered by the renowned artist. In her address, she expressed:
“I’m not here as a celebrity. I’m not here as a politician. I’m here as a mother. A mother who cares deeply about the world my children and all of our children live in, a world where we have the freedom to control our bodies, a world where we’re not divided.”
After her remarks, Beyoncé was joined by fellow singer Kelly Rowland to introduce Vice President Kamala Harris on stage. In contrast to 2016, when Beyoncé performed at Hillary Clinton’s campaign rally in Cleveland, she did not sing this time, disappointing many in attendance.
On social media, a TikToker criticized Beyoncé for her speech, stating:
“This message is for Beyoncé. We don’t care about how many speeches you read from a teleprompter, or what rituals you engage in… Texas will always be a red state…”
The TikToker further commented:
“If you’re here trying to rally the Black vote for a politician who lacks concrete plans for our community, it shows how little you truly care about your own people! Bye-bye Beyoncé…”
The TikTok user also suggested that Beyoncé should be more concerned about associations with figures like Diddy and Epstein, amidst ongoing rumors.
Criticism Aimed at Beyoncé and Kamala Harris Following Rally Speech
The rally for Kamala Harris in Houston appeared to fall short of expectations, with many attendees and viewers expressing disappointment over the absence of a live performance by Beyoncé, which had been anticipated. Numerous posts on social media indicated that many had come simply to see a free concert rather than a political speech.
During her speech, the Grammy-winning artist stated:
“We’re all part of something much bigger. We must vote, and we need you.”
Reports from Time indicated that approximately 30,000 individuals attended the Houston rally. Although Beyoncé was expected to perform, it was actually Willie Nelson who took the stage instead.
Beyoncé, who grew up in Houston, Texas, had her 2016 song “Freedom”from the album Lemonade adopted as the anthem for Harris’ campaign.
In July, Vice President Harris first introduced this song as her campaign anthem, coinciding with Tina Knowles’ public endorsement of Harris. The Associated Press reported that a campaign official confirmed Beyoncé had granted permission for the use of her song as the campaign’s theme.
During the Friday rally, Harris articulated her views on abortion restrictions, stating:
“Women have died because of Trump abortion bans. In just four years as President, Donald Trump was able to erase half a century of hard-fought progress for women. Now, he wants to go even further… If Trump wins again, he will ban abortion nationwide.”
With the presidential elections fast approaching on November 5, 2024, the political climate is intensifying.
