An unfortunate incident unfolded when a customer who ordered an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D CPU from Amazon discovered that he had received only the heatsink lid, with the CPU itself missing entirely.
Amazon Scam Alert: User Left Disappointed After Purchase
This isn’t the first time we’ve reported on misleading deals facilitated by Amazon. Over the years, many buyers have been misled into believing they scored a bargain, only to find empty boxes or completely different items—such as bricks or sand—inside.
This particular case, as shared on the PCBuildHelp subreddit by the user Bigmancal420, took a more perplexing turn. After purchasing the Ryzen 9 9950X3D for a remarkable $180 from a local Amazon returns warehouse—given that the typical retail price exceeds $600—he was prohibited from inspecting the contents of the package prior to his purchase, a standard Amazon policy. This left him anxious as he returned home to unwrap what he hoped would be a powerful new CPU.
Upon opening the package, he was met with a puzzling sight. Instead of the expected processor, he discovered a plastic wrapper beneath the heatsink lid. Extracting the clamshell revealed that not only was the CPU absent, but the entire PCB, which includes the two Zen 5 CCDs and the large IO die, had been removed.
Interestingly, AMD’s boxed CPUs typically feature a cut-out that visually confirms the presence of the actual chip inside. This cut-out allows potential buyers to see the heatsink lid and the CPU designation, engendering confidence that the product is intact. Unfortunately, the user was left only with the heatsink lid, leading one to speculate how this oversight occurred. The inability to inspect the item prior to purchase played a significant role in this mishap.

This situation suggests a possible loophole in Amazon’s return warehouse protocol. It is likely that a previous owner delidded the processor, placed the heatsink lid back in the box, and successfully returned it, thereby taking advantage of the return policy. Unfortunately, the subsequent buyer was left holding the bag in this case.
This incident serves as a crucial reminder for consumers: always verify the items you are purchasing, particularly when navigating the uncertain realm of returned hardware components. Avoid unnecessary risks akin to those faced by this user. We can only hope that Amazon will resolve this issue by offering a full refund to the affected buyer.
