Bungie’s Mid-Season Update for Marathon: Key Changes and Enhancements
Bungie has rolled out an extensive mid-season refresh for Marathon, introducing a variety of balance adjustments to weaponry, Runner Shell abilities, equipment, and weapon mods, while also refining progression mechanics. Notably, this update sees the conclusion of the Duos experimental queue, paving the way for new gameplay experiences.
Players interested in the detailed list of changes, both major and minor, can refer to the official patch notes. Below, we highlight some of the most impactful changes that will shape the game, followed by notable minor adjustments.
Encouraging Collaborative Play
One of the standout features introduced in this update is the C. A.R. R.I. system, short for the CyberAcme Runner Reinforcement Initiative. This innovative approach aims to foster collaboration within the game’s competitive atmosphere, rewarding players for teamwork, whether with allies or cautious partnerships with rivals.
By working together on contracts and successfully exfiltrating, players can earn CyberAcme Commendations. Furthermore, Bungie has introduced a ‘Stay Together’ feature that allows players to continue teaming up after completing a match, even if only one member successfully exfiltrates. This promotes ongoing cooperation within the player community.
New Equipment Fostering Team Play
The update also introduces two notable new items: Depleted Self-Revives and the Mercy Kit. The former is available exclusively during solo runs, serving as a transient aid, while the latter allows players to revive fallen enemy Runners, further promoting a sense of goodwill amongst competitors. These additions suggest that Bungie is gradually softening Marathon’s aggressive gameplay approach, creating opportunities for players who prefer opportunities for non-combat interactions.

Runner Shell Adjustments
Among the Runner shells, the Recon shell has received significant improvements. Its Tracker Drone now exhibits enhanced tracking precision and turn rates, alongside optimized travel speeds to reduce automatic detonation when not targeting an opponent. Furthermore, the Echo Pulse visibility has been toned down, minimizing self-pinging while ensuring clear enemy identification.
In a notable tweak, the Thief shell’s Pickpocket Drone is now restricted to carrying a maximum of one Claymore, reducing the risk of overwhelming surprise attacks.
Weapon Tweaks and New Features
In terms of weapon mechanics, Bungie has implemented buffs for Railguns, enhancing their competitiveness at mid-to-long ranges. Additionally, the game will now feature 11 new Deluxe Unique weapons, available on the Perimeter and Dire Marsh maps, which come equipped with exclusive mods, offering players unique tactical advantages.
Players can also anticipate fresh cosmetics as part of the Rewards Pass, fulfilling Bungie’s commitment to elevating player experiences. Game Director Joe Zeigler has confirmed the participation phase of the Duos experiment is concluding, with plans to integrate it as a permanent feature in Season 2.
