Bungie shares updates on Marathon development as playtests set to expand in 2025
Over a year ago, Bungie introduced Marathon as its next significant undertaking, reviving its iconic branding for a sci-fi PvP extraction shooter. While details about this project were scarce at the time, a recent developer update from Bungie provided an exciting glimpse into its progress.
According to game director Joe Ziegler, Marathon will feature a class-based system, allowing players to select and modify the abilities of various characters known as Runners. The gear players collect during their sessions will play a crucial role in tailoring the skills and equipment of their chosen classes.
Ziegler noted that the gameplay experience is designed to be “intense,”indicating that it may not appeal to every player. However, those who appreciate the high-stakes survival elements typical of the genre will likely find Marathon compelling.
While gameplay footage remains under wraps for now, two Runners, codenamed Thief and Stealth, were revealed during today’s update. As suggested by their titles, both characters focus on stealth, prioritizing loot acquisition and trickery in their playstyle.
Ziegler mentioned that the game’s environments are “starting to come together in a truly stunning way,”although the models for Runners and enemies are still being refined. “It’s a bit premature to present everything as a cohesive unit,”he explained. “For those familiar with the game development process, all elements are progressing as planned. They may not be assembled yet, but we eagerly await the opportunity to share the complete picture, especially in action.”
Looking ahead, Bungie plans to broaden its playtests in 2025 to include more participants. Although a release date has yet to be announced, it’s confirmed that Marathon will not be a free-to-play title and will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
