Bug Fixes in PowerToys 0.95.1 for Theme-Switching Issues and More

Microsoft Releases PowerToys Version 0.95.1 for Enhanced User Experience

Microsoft has rolled out a significant update for PowerToys, tailored for both Windows 10 and Windows 11 users. Despite Windows 10’s phase-out, PowerToys continues to receive support, providing users with essential functionality improvements. The latest version, 0.95.1, introduces crucial enhancements particularly for the new Light Switch module, facilitating seamless automatic theme switching in both operating systems.

Key Improvements in PowerToys 0.95.1

One of the primary user concerns regarding Light Switch was its default activation, leading to unsolicited theme changes. The recent update has addressed this issue by disabling Light Switch by default, thereby respecting user preferences. Additionally, users can now manage their theme settings more effectively with the renaming of “Manual”mode to “Fixed Hours”, and the introduction of a new mode that allows users to switch themes with a keyboard shortcut even when scheduled switching is turned off.

Fixes and Enhancements

The update also brings a series of bug fixes and performance improvements across various modules of PowerToys:

  • Command Palette (CmdPal):
    • Resolved crashes occurring on pages with filters, such as Windows Terminal profiles, by eliminating runtime bindings from the FiltersDropDown control.
    • Ensured proper application of window style changes, such as WS_EX_TOOLWINDOW, by refreshing cached window data.
  • Light Switch:
    • Addressed the issue of Light Switch being enabled by default.
    • Eliminated the override of manual schedules by sunset calculations.
    • Clarified “Manual”mode to “Fixed Hours.”
    • Introduced a new “Off”mode which disables the schedule but retains the ability to switch using a shortcut.
    • Fixed an issue that incorrectly allowed the taskbar to assume an accent color in light mode.
    • Corrected the issue of light/dark transition times not updating when switching between modes.
  • Find My Mouse:
    • Resolved a focus loss issue within the window.
    • Fixed the bug that caused the mouse cursor to display a busy indicator (hourglass).
  • Installer Improvements:
    • Migrated to WiX v5, removing the outdated WiX v3 infrastructure, and consequently reducing build times.
  • Bug Reporting Enhancements:
    • Improved the functionality of the bug report system.
