On October 3, 2024, South Korean media outlet Star News reported that BTS’ Jungkook’s documentary film, I AM STILL, has already amassed over $11.5 million worldwide within just 11 days of its global debut. The highly-anticipated film was released in select cinemas across the globe on September 18, 2024.
This solo documentary captures the incredible journey of the BTS star leading up to the release of his first solo album, GOLDEN, which debuted on November 3, 2023. It features never-before-seen moments, behind-the-scenes footage, and exclusive interviews. The documentary earned over $3.12 million (approximately 4.1 billion won) in North America alone, contributing to an international box office total of over $8.53 million.
Remarkably, it became the first documentary film by a Korean solo artist to break into the top 10, ranking No. 9 in the North American box office just three days after its release. Additionally, it achieved the highest opening-day earnings for a documentary film by a K-pop idol in South Korea, attracting over 39,440 viewers in theaters across South Korea as of October 3.
BTS’ Jungkook Achieves Unprecedented Success as a K-pop Solo Artist with GOLDEN
BTS’ Jungkook launched his debut solo album, GOLDEN, featuring 11 English tracks on November 3, 2023. The album’s title track, Standing Next To You, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 chart, marking his third song to reach the top spot in 2023. It followed SEVEN and 3D, both of which also debuted at No. 1 earlier in the year.
The album achieved the record for the fastest album by a Korean solo artist to surpass 1 billion streams on the day of its release, driven by the pre-released single SEVEN (featuring Latto), which dropped on July 14, 2023, and reached over 1 billion streams by September 2023. GOLDEN also became the longest-charting album by an Asian artist on Spotify’s Weekly Top Albums Global chart.
With these accomplishments, the BTS idol broke Miley Cyrus’ record for accumulating over 1 billion streams in the shortest period. Miley Cyrus’ single, Flowers, achieved the 1 billion Spotify streams milestone within 112 days, while Jungkook’s SEVEN surpassed that record by an impressive 108 days, becoming the fastest song by a global artist to achieve this milestone.
In other news, Jungkook began his mandatory military service in South Korea on December 12, 2023, and is expected to return in June 2025. He enlisted alongside his bandmate, Park Jimin, while BTS members Namjoon and Taehyung joined the military a day earlier, on December 11, 2023.
