BTS Jin’s Solo Single ‘The Astronaut’ Achieves Over Six Million Global Sales

On October 5, 2024, the Twitter account @ThePopCore announced that BTS member Jin’s debut solo single, The Astronaut, has achieved remarkable success, selling over six million units worldwide. This impressive figure comprises 800 million on-demand streams and 1.39 million single sales. The units were estimated using a tiered calculation method: one single sale equates to 125 premium streams or 375 ad-supported (free) streams.

The data for these estimates were gathered in accordance with industry standards, utilizing various audio and music streaming platforms such as Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, iTunes, Melon, Genie, Line Music, JioSaavn, Anghami, Tencent Music, NetEase, among others.

The Astronaut was released on October 28, 2022, under BigHit Music. The song was co-written by Jin along with the British rock band Coldplay, Norwegian DJ Kygo, and other notable collaborators including Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion, Chris Martin, Kyrre Gorvell-Dahll, Joan La Barbara, Johann Johannsson, and Moses Martin. The production credits go to Kygo and Bill Rahko. This track was specifically described as a heartfelt gift for Jin’s fans in anticipation of his mandatory military service.

After its release, The Astronaut sold over 700,000 physical copies, according to Hanteo charts, achieving the highest first-day sales for a K-soloist single in Hanteo history. It subsequently debuted at the top position on the Circle Album Chart for week 44, covering the period from October 23 to 29, 2022.

The success of the track extended internationally, ranking fourth on the Oricon Daily Digital Singles chart, and later climbing to number two with over 3,000 downloads. Additionally, The Astronaut marked Jin’s first solo entry on the United States Billboard Hot 100, debuting at number 51 on the chart dated November 22, 2022, with 4.9 million domestic streams and 44,000 downloads in its initial tracking week.

In a recent development, BTS’ Jin was announced as the global ambassador for the prestigious Italian luxury fashion brand Gucci. Creative director Sabato De Sarno made the announcement on August 8, 2024, via an Instagram post, expressing excitement about Jin joining the Gucci family. He described Jin as having a “warm and kind personality”along with a “unique style,”stating, “He is a generous and extraordinary artist who is able to move people with his music, which makes us even more honored to share this journey with him.”

Additionally, BTS’ Jin has been appointed as the first male global ambassador for Laneige, a South Korean cosmetics brand. He will feature in a promotional campaign for the brand’s popular Cream Skin 2-in-1 moisturizer and toner.
