BTS: Exploring Their Musical Journey and Impact on Global Culture

On June 13, 2013, when seven South Korean young men took to the stage, few could have imagined the monumental cultural impact they would soon wield. Known as BTS, short for Bangtan Sonyeondan or “Bulletproof Boy Scouts, ”the group made their debut under Big Hit Entertainment with the release of their single album “2 Cool 4 Skool, ”featuring the lead track, “No More Dream.”

The formation of BTS revolved around RM, an underground rapper whose talent caught the eye of producer Bang Si-hyuk in 2010. The group’s initial focus on hip-hop gradually expanded, transforming them into a worldwide sensation that significantly altered the perception of Korean music and youth culture.

Not long after RM’s introduction, Suga (Min Yoongi) joined the group, having already made a name for himself in the underground hip-hop scene as both a prominent rapper and an adept producer. Jin (Kim Seokjin), the eldest member, entered the lineup in 2011, ahead of J-Hope (Jung Hoseok), who transitioned from his role in the underground dance group NEURON to assume the position of BTS’s primary dancer.

The assembly of the group continued with Jimin (Park Jimin), who brought a rich background in contemporary dance from the Busan High School of Arts just months before their official debut. V (Kim Taehyung) rounded out the vocal line, while Jungkook (Jeon Jungkook), who joined the trainee program at the tender age of 13, became the final member before BTS’s official launch on June 13, 2013.

Path to Global Recognition

2016 marked a pivotal year in BTS’s journey with the release of their album “Wings, ”which recorded over one million sales in South Korea, earning them the distinguished title of “million sellers.”This album climbed to number 26 on the Billboard 200, a groundbreaking achievement for any K-pop act at the time.

The “Love Yourself”series, which spanned from 2017 to 2018, proved to be a critical turning point in BTS’s career. This trilogy—comprising “Love Yourself: Her, ””Love Yourself: Tear, ”and “Love Yourself: Answer”—narrated a comprehensive tale centered around the pursuit of self-love. Notably, “Love Yourself: Her”received over one million pre-orders, solidifying BTS as the first K-pop group to reach such a milestone.

In August 2020, BTS achieved the remarkable feat of securing their first number-one song on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Dynamite, “their inaugural fully English-language single. This milestone allowed them to become the first all-South Korean ensemble to top the chart. Their success continued with “Butter”in 2021, which sustained its peak position on the Billboard Hot 100 for ten consecutive weeks, becoming the longest-running number-one song that year.

In October 2022, Big Hit Entertainment announced plans for BTS to commence their mandatory military service, with a projected reunion set around 2025. Jin initiated this process, enlisting in December 2022, and was discharged on June 12, 2024, after fulfilling 18 months of service. The remaining members followed suit, ensuring their service concluding by June 2025.

A Promising Reunion Ahead

On December 21, 2025, all seven members of BTS came together for a highly anticipated livestream on Weverse, marking their first collective appearance since completing their military service. During this online session, the group generated excitement by hinting at their imminent comeback.

RM, the group’s leader, proclaimed, “2026 will be the year of BTS, ”assuring fans that “something truly significant is on the horizon.”

J-Hope expressed the gravity of the forthcoming year, stating, “Next year is a crucial time for us, ”while other members shared their excitement as well as their impatience for the long wait. RM added that the group had completed recording their new album months prior and has been fine-tuning it in various locations including the United States. Suga teased, “There will be news shortly.”

Plans indicate a full group comeback in spring 2026, accompanied by an expansive world tour. Jungkook hinted that “this spring will be more essential than ever, ”and RM previously advised fans to “expect updates by late March”regarding their return.
