The action comedy film Brothers, helmed by director Max Barbakow, premiered exclusively on Prime Video. Featuring a stellar cast that includes Josh Brolin, Peter Dinklage, and Marisa Tomei, the plot centers on ex-convict Moke, portrayed by Brolin, who strives for a legitimate life.
Nonetheless, his twin sibling, Jady, persuades him to partake in one last heist. This leads the duo on a perilous adventure where they must reconcile their longstanding disputes to endure. The film culminates in a gripping shootout set in an abandoned shopping mall.
Fueled into a life of crime by their mother Cath, played by Glenn Close, Moke and Jady narrowly escape legal repercussions thanks to a heart-wrenching sacrifice made by her. The storyline unfolds as a captivating journey of redemption, showcasing Cath’s deep remorse for the criminal paths her sons followed, which she attributes to her absence as a parent.
A Poignant Sacrifice Marks the Conclusion of Brothers
Cath Munger, the mother of Jady and Moke, abandoned them during their childhood. After three decades of silence, her absence left the siblings entwined in a life of crime. Their dysfunctional dynamics can be traced back to Cath’s previous treatment of them.
Many years prior, after a criminal endeavor, Cath coldly stated she had “no use for them,” prompting her departure. Eventually, as adults, during one of their heists, Moke manages to evade capture, while Jady opts to return after making a deal with a prison guard in exchange for the emeralds he claimed Moke still possessed.
In a twist, Jady’s gamble hinges on the belief that Glenn, his mother’s associate from years ago, had ingested the emeralds to avoid detection by the authorities. Jady’s scheme is to drag his brother into a road trip to unearth Glenn’s grave in search of the emeralds.
Why Did Jady Keep the Truth from Moke?
Jady held back the truth from Moke for multiple reasons. Primarily, he desired to secure the emeralds for himself. Although he easily lured Moke into the plan for “one last heist,” the nature of their plot was one that Moke would likely reject outright. In fact, Jady even manipulated his brother’s job situation to coerce him into compliance.
Initially believed to be missing, Cath had actually reached out to Jady, who kept this from Moke. He feared that Moke would refuse to cooperate if he discovered their mother was part of the scheme.
As the adventure unfolds, Moke eventually uncovers the truth—that it was his own family that orchestrated his job loss, as well as Cath’s involvement in the new heist.
How Did Jady and Moke Manage to Escape?
As the climax approaches, Jady and Moke find themselves in a tight spot with Farful, played by Brendan Fraser, who has been on the trail of the emeralds. Unexpectedly, Cath chooses to make off with the jewels, leaving her sons disheartened in the face of danger.
Farful now has no option but to pursue Cath, even as the brothers cleverly manage to extricate themselves. They follow her to a mall, where she attempts to sell the emeralds, just as law enforcement closes in on them. The movie culminates in an emotionally charged exchange among the three family members.
In a moment of regret, Cath decides to turn herself in to the authorities, allowing Moke and Jady to flee. The resolution sees Moke negotiate with the presiding judge regarding Jady’s situation, trading the heist proceeds for evidence that bears his fingerprints.
With Cath captured but the emeralds still in their possession, the brothers emerge with enough resources to turn their lives around despite their mother’s fate. Brothers is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
