Brendan Allen claims Dricus Du Plessis was “given” the middleweight belt, says ‘Stillknocks’ has only a “puncher’s chance” against him

Dricus Du Plessis, the current middleweight champion, was recently discussed by Brendan Allen and his thoughts were shared.

Sean Strickland defended his title for the first time against Du Plessis at UFC 297’s main event on Jan. 20, held at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada.

The fight went on for a duration of 25 minutes and ultimately, Du Plessis emerged as the victorious fighter by split decision, earning him the title of the new UFC middleweight champion. This made him the inaugural South African to hold a UFC championship, residing and training in Africa.

Despite Allen and others’ belief that Du Plessis did not deserve to win the fight, he was still awarded the belt. At the media day for UFC Fight Night 90, Allen was questioned about his opinion on Du Plessis as a champion, to which he responded:

”I think he was given that, I don’t think he took it from the champion. From my eyes, you need to take the belt from the champion.”

Allen also discussed the possibility of facing Du Plessis in a future matchup.

”As far as stylistically on the matchup, I don’t think he has what everyone else has, a punchers chance. He beats me nowhere else.”

Allen has been confirmed to compete against Chris Curtis in a middleweight match at UFC Fight Night 90, taking place on April 6 at UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. While he was originally set to face Marvin Vettori, the Italian fighter had to withdraw from the fight due to an untimely injury. This opened the door for ‘The Action Man’ to step in as a short-notice replacement.

The upcoming fight will be a rematch, as the two had previously faced each other at UFC Vegas 44 in 2021. Curtis emerged victorious with a second-round TKO after delivering a brutal knee to the face.

Brendan Allen shares his thoughts on facing Chris Curtis in the ring

Brendan Allen has experienced a six-fight winning streak since his defeat to Chris Curtis in late 2021, which has elevated his position in the middleweight rankings. Out of these six victories, five were secured by way of rear-naked choke submissions.

Allen is scheduled to once again go up against Curtis at UFC Vegas 90 on April 6. During the previously mentioned interview, Allen expressed his thoughts about the upcoming bout with Curtis.

The words that he uttered were:

”I think Chris is a lot more technically capable in the striking realm. He’s been around a long time, fought a lot of good guys, he’s game as they come so I had prepared in a whole different realm mentally.”
