Box Office Update: Lionsgate Kicks Off 2025 with “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera”

Lionsgate has started 2025 with a notable success through its sequel Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, amidst a lackluster performance from the biopic Better Man, which has struggled in its wider release. The film industry saw Lionsgate facing challenges throughout the latter half of 2024, with several films like White Bird, Megalopolis, The Crow, Borderlands, and The Killer’s Game failing to make a significant impact at the box office.

Despite some projects like The Best Christmas Pageant Ever recovering their production costs, the company has not celebrated a major blockbuster in recent months. As reported by Deadline, Den of Thieves 2 is anticipated to pull in approximately $15 million during its opening weekend, closely mirroring the original film’s $15.2 million debut in 2018. This unexpected achievement allows it to secure the top position at the box office, managing to outpace prominent competitors like Mufasa and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which had been vying for the No. 1 spot since their release on December 20.

Additionally, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera marks a significant milestone for Lionsgate, representing their first No. 1 opening since The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes debuted in November 2023. This performance is a welcome turnaround for the company after a string of underperforming films.

In stark contrast, the launch of Better Man has not fared well among North American audiences. Current estimates predict the film to rake in only around $1 million over the weekend, likely preventing it from entering the Top 5 and placing it at risk of falling out of the Top 10 altogether.
