In Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Konohamaru Sarutobi is a character laden with promise, yet his potential remains largely unfulfilled. As the grandson of the Third Hokage and a protégé of Naruto Uzumaki, Konohamaru carried the weight of a prestigious legacy. While former Team 7 members advanced their skills and embodied the influence of their mentors—Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru—Konohamaru’s character struggles to gain precedence and recognition amidst a cast of vibrant personalities.
With Naruto still active, Konohamaru shares notable traits with him and could have continued the path laid by his uncle, Asuma Sarutobi. Unfortunately, the series fails to provide the necessary focus for his character to shine. Initially showcasing moments of promise and leadership, Konohamaru’s development feels stunted, leaving him unable to embody the strength expected from the next generation.
The Ninja Who Fell Short of Fan Expectations
A True Sarutobi: Is He Falling Behind?
Konohamaru was initially a source of energy and enthusiasm in Naruto, with his playful spirit and determination. His humor, characterized by light-hearted competitions with Naruto over who could deploy the best harem jutsu, endeared him to fans. His appearances, even in filler episodes, were often highlights. However, in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, the character feels neglected, missing opportunities that could invigorate his charm and relevance.
As Team 7’s leader and a successor to Naruto, expectations from Konohamaru remain high. Unfortunately, his role often seems diminished relative to other characters. His capability to develop into a pillar of strength akin to his revered ancestors—Hiruzen Sarutobi, Asuma Sarutobi, or Naruto—has yet to be fully realized. Many fans, who admired Konohamaru’s growth in the original Naruto series, were eager for his evolution into a more significant player in this continuation.
Regrettably, Boruto does not do justice to Konohamaru’s legacy, leaving viewers craving deeper insights into his leadership, character development, and significant contributions. A more pronounced representation is crucial to uphold the reputation of the Sarutobi clan, celebrated for its strength and influence in Konoha. Konohamaru was once a memorable figure in Naruto, and his overshadowing in Boruto not only stifles his potential but also risks disappointing longtime fans.
Konohamaru Is Too Weak to Fight God-like Aliens
Boruto, Sarada, and Mitsuki: Overshadowing Konohamaru
Several factors could explain why Konohamaru’s anticipated potential remains unrealized in Boruto. The series introduced a new cadre of ninjas, including Boruto, Sarada, and the revamped Ino-Shika-Cho, alongside formidable new adversaries. With the continuation of themes surrounding Kaguya Otsutsuki, Boruto has introduced powerful extraterrestrial foes, particularly those characterized as god-like threats, upping the ante for our heroes.
In the new generation, Konohamaru parallels Kakashi Hatake in terms of leadership amongst Team 7, comprising Boruto, Sarada, and Mitsuki. However, he is not yet at Kakashi’s power level. Though he serves as a mentor to the new generation, the overwhelming strength of their enemies eclipses his abilities.
Konohamaru cannot consistently measure up against the divine enemies encountered in Boruto; these formidable beings present challenges that even a high-level jonin like himself cannot overcome. His students, especially Boruto—who inherited both Naruto’s exceptional talent and unique abilities—exhibit capabilities far exceeding theirs. Sarada’s blend of intelligence and skill, along with Mitsuki’s exceptional genetic modifications, both contribute to Konohamaru’s overshadowing in the narrative.
Konohamaru Can Use Naruto’s Famous Jutsu
Konohamaru Needs the Spotlight He Deserves
One of Konohamaru’s noteworthy accomplishments is his mastery of the Rasengan, a signature jutsu originally taught to him by Naruto. Their bond, underscored by spirited rivalry and camaraderie, allows for significant growth on Konohamaru’s part. Initially, he relied on a shadow clone to perform the Rasengan, much like Naruto did in his early days. Eventually, through persistent training, Konohamaru learned to execute the technique independently, demonstrating his dedication and potential.
While his character doesn’t always receive the spotlight in battles against divine entities, there remains an opportunity for his talents to resurface. Konohamaru’s leadership capabilities and strategic acumen could be pivotal in the ongoing arcs of Boruto, especially as the narrative progresses.
The ongoing storyline in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex presents a promising scenario: Konohamaru leads a team on a treacherous mission against two Divine Trees—foes that exceed even the might of the Otsutsuki. This moment could serve as a critical juncture, showcasing not only his tactical brilliance but also the skills he has developed over the years, ultimately reminding viewers of his true potential as a Sarutobi and shinobi.
