Borderlands 4 Achieves Impressive Sales Milestone

Following its recent launch, Borderlands 4 has made a notable impact in the gaming industry, achieving strong concurrency figures on Steam. However, its release was not without its hiccups, prompting Gearbox’s president and CEO, Randy Pitchford, to engage with the community and share some insights.

Sales Performance and Revenue Insights

Despite the absence of official updates from 2K Games and Gearbox, analyst Rhys Elliott from Alinea Analytics has provided valuable insights. Their preliminary estimates indicate that Borderlands 4 has sold over two million units across all platforms, with approximately one million units sold on Steam alone, including an impressive 750, 000 during the first week. The game has reportedly generated more than $150 million in revenue.

Comparison with Indie Titles

This strong performance positions Borderlands 4 in a competitive light, even surpassing the sales of anticipated indie titles like Hollow Knight: Silksong—specifically on Steam—and other indie successes such as Peak. Notably, even the original Hollow Knight has seen a resurgence, selling an additional 205, 000 units last week. The indie development scene also shined with Shape of Dreams, a cooperative roguelite from Lizard Smoothie, which managed to sell nearly 200, 000 units, a remarkable achievement for a two-person team.

Upcoming Releases and Anticipated Titles

In the realm of upcoming games, the Alinea Analytics report also mentions Dying Light: The Beast, which is set to launch tomorrow. This title’s release was expedited due to Techland celebrating over one million pre-orders. Interestingly, its journey began as a second DLC for Dying Light 2: Stay Human but ultimately evolved into a distinctive standalone game. Players who purchased the Dying Light 2 Ultimate Edition will gain access to Dying Light: The Beast, with estimates suggesting there are between 700, 000 and 800, 000 eligible users. The current pre-orders on Steam are around 100, 000, indicating that the remaining pre-orders mostly stem from console purchases.
