BioWare Shifts Full Focus to Mass Effect, No DLC Updates for Dragon Age: The Veilguard
BioWare Shifts Focus: No DLC for Dragon Age: The Veilguard
After a decade-long wait, BioWare has revived the beloved Dragon Age series with the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, captivating fantasy RPG enthusiasts worldwide. The game is breaking records on Steam, outpacing even the popular title Star Wars Jedi: Survivor in terms of concurrent player numbers. However, fans anticipating downloadable content (DLC) or expansions should temper their expectations, as BioWare has officially announced that it has moved on from this title.
BioWare’s Creative Direction
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, creative director John Epler shared critical insights into the studio’s current priorities. Following the completion of The Veilguard, BioWare has redirected its focus to the next installment of the Mass Effect series, leaving no room for additional content for its latest Dragon Age release.
Insights into the Upcoming Mass Effect Title
Although specifics about the upcoming Mass Effect game, first teased in 2020, remain scarce, the project director has indicated that the new title will maintain the “mature tone of the original Trilogy.” This stands in contrast to the mixed reception of Veilguard‘s updated visual style. Epler emphasized, “Mass Effect is photorealistic and will be as long as I’m running it,” assuring fans of a high-quality visual experience.
Evolution of The Veilguard
Initially conceptualized as a multiplayer experience, The Veilguard eventually transitioned to a single-player format. Epler explained, “We were alienating parts of our fan base that had been with us for a long time. The reception to Anthem was very clear: we needed to return to the core elements that made us successful.” The shift reflects a commitment to storytelling that resonates with long-time fans.
The Future of Multiplayer Games
Looking ahead, Epler addressed the studio’s potential for future multiplayer projects, mentioning that while narrative-driven games like Final Fantasy XIV deliver compelling stories, he appreciates the creative focus that single-player games afford. “Crafting these worlds and experiences is where single-player shines,” he noted, underlining BioWare’s commitment to immersive storytelling.
The Remaster Dilemma
For fans of the Mass Effect series, BioWare previously released the Legendary Edition, a remastered collection of the original trilogy. However, Epler has indicated that a similar collection for the Dragon Age series is unlikely. The core issue lies in the diverse game engines used across the franchise—Eclipse Engine for Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II, and Frostbite for Inquisition. In contrast, the Mass Effect trilogy consistently utilized Unreal Engine, simplifying the remastering process.
As the gaming landscape evolves, fans eagerly await further developments from BioWare, hopeful for fresh storytelling in the Mass Effect universe while cherishing the legacy of Dragon Age.
