Uncertain Future for the BioShock Franchise: Development Setbacks and Leadership Changes
The iconic BioShock franchise has been noticeably absent from the gaming landscape for several years. While 2K Games, the intellectual property owner and publisher, expresses a strong desire to revive the series, recent developments indicate that challenges persist in the production of the next installment. The company has acknowledged that the latest project has yet to resonate with their expectations.
“We are working hard to set BioShock up for the best possible future, ” says 2K in a statement to Bloomberg.“Right now, we have a good game, but we are committed to delivering a great one. We are working closely with leadership at the studio to define this path.”
According to investigative journalist Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, sources close to 2K and the current developer, Cloud Chamber, revealed further insights into the state of the BioShock project. Cloud Chamber took over development responsibilities from Irrational Games following the release of BioShock Infinite in 2016.
Reports indicate that the anticipated follow-up failed to pass a critical review by 2K executives, who expressed dissatisfaction with the game’s current trajectory. This setback has resulted in a delay in development as the narrative—a key component of the BioShock experience—was deemed unsatisfactory. The sources suggest that a narrative overhaul will be necessary as the team continues its work. Given the series’ reputation for intricate storytelling and shocking plot twists, this decision may ultimately enhance the game’s appeal.

In a significant shakeup, 2K has removed Kelley Gilmore, the head of Cloud Chamber, and creative director Hogarth de la Plante from their roles in the project. The publisher remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering a BioShock title that not only meets but exceeds the high expectations of its dedicated fanbase.
Furthermore, the report mentioned the cancellation of a full remake of the original 2007 BioShock, a project that was reportedly in development earlier this year. Details about the team behind this remake remain unclear. With the tenth anniversary of BioShock Infinite approaching and the original BioShock nearing its 20-year mark, it seems the company was poised to leverage this remake to rejuvenate interest in the franchise before launching the new installment.
