BioShock 4 Development Update: Significant Layoffs and Release Timeline Shift

In a recent turn of events just prior to the anticipated Gamescom ONL 2025, Jason Schreier of Bloomberg reported critical news regarding the development of BioShock 4. The studio responsible for the game, Cloud Chamber, has been affected by layoffs, leading to a reduction in its workforce by an unspecified number. Notably, this comes alongside the announcement of Rod Fergusson, the former general manager of Diablo, stepping in as the new head of the studio.

Take-Two Interactive has confirmed these layoffs, which have impacted approximately 80 out of Cloud Chamber’s 250 employees. In Schreier’s latest report, he highlighted a troubling possibility: the highly anticipated BioShock 4 may not release until mid-to-late 2027. This dramatic delay represents a significant setback for the project, which fans have awaited for over a decade.

An internal communication from David Ismailer, the president of 2K, was shared with Bloomberg, providing insights into the rationale behind these layoffs. While Ismailer discussed the decision-making process, he did not delve into specifics about the number of affected staff.

Ismailer stated, “While we’re excited about the foundational gameplay elements of the project, we’ve made the decision with studio leadership to rework certain aspects that are core to a BioShock game, and in doing so are reducing the size of the development team to focus on this work and give the game more time in development.”

He added, “I know this is tough news for everyone. If your role is being affected, you’ll hear from your manager or studio leadership today with details on severance, career services, and support resources. There is no easy way to do this, but we hope to do whatever we can to support you through this. I want to thank each of you for your dedication and hard work.”

Sources close to the situation indicated that BioShock 4 initially targeted a release window of late 2026 or early 2027. However, these recent developments have forced a reevaluation of the timeline, pushing the expected release into mid-to-late 2027, or possibly beyond. If the game does launch in 2027, it will have been in development for over ten years.

Schreier’s report sheds light on various challenges faced by Cloud Chamber throughout the development process, including the struggle of constructing a large-scale, AAA project while simultaneously establishing a new studio—a feat that has proven difficult for many in the gaming industry.

It is indeed disheartening for fans to witness the evolution of a title that once sparked immense excitement within the community. One can only speculate whether BioShock 4 will have the same impact in 2027 as it might have had three years following the release of BioShock Infinite in 2016.

Given Take-Two’s significant investment into the project, it seems unlikely they will abandon it now without exhausting all possible avenues. It remains to be seen if Fergusson and the remaining team can successfully navigate these turbulent waters and deliver a game that meets fan expectations.
