Bing Wallpaper App in Windows 11 Directs to Bing.com with Desktop Clicks

Microsoft’s Bing Wallpaper application, an optional tool for users of Windows 11, has implemented a feature that opens Bing.com whenever a user clicks on the desktop background. While this feature can be disabled, it is enabled by default and can lead to frustration for many users.

The Bing Wallpaper app primarily functions as a tool for changing wallpapers and is distinct in its selection of images, which are sourced from independent photographers and renowned partners like Getty Images and National Geographic. Users who install this app can enjoy a fresh wallpaper every day upon booting their PCs.

Upon first installation, the app introduces a new background automatically, eliminating the need for users to adjust settings. This feature showcases the seamless integration of Microsoft’s own products.

Unexpected Browser Launch with Each Click

Recently highlighted by Windows Latest, the app has a rather disruptive feature that launches a new browser tab whenever users click anywhere on their desktop background.

Having previously favored pastel-colored wallpapers, I decided to try out the Bing Wallpaper app. Right after installation, I was greeted with two pop-ups: one providing an overview of features and another requesting my consent to set Microsoft Bing as the default homepage for various browsers.

This request raised concerns, as many users might inadvertently grant permission, thereby altering their browser settings without realizing it. I opted out of this and proceeded to admire my new desktop wallpaper.

Shortly thereafter, I noticed a Visual Search icon appeared at the top right of my desktop. Clicking on the primary subject of the wallpaper prompted an immediate search on Bing for that item.

Although I found it interesting, I felt the automatic browser launch was excessive. After verifying my settings, I discovered a toggle labeled “Desktop click opens Bing“, which was enabled by default.

After disabling the toggle, I tested it again and found that clicking on the desktop no longer prompted the browser to open. It seems that this feature might only trigger occasionally when clicking on the desktop.

News Alerts Integrating with Wallpapers

Moreover, the app offers more than just wallpaper changes; it defaults to displaying news alerts, trivia, and recommendations, making one wonder why such features are necessary for what is supposed to be a simple wallpaper application.

The Hotspot Widget feature highlights areas on the wallpaper image, which can trigger pop-ups with trivia or information upon clicking. However, such functionalities feel unnecessary for a wallpaper-centric app.

For those genuinely interested in learning more about their wallpaper images, the updated Win + Shift + S shortcut provides a more streamlined visual search option without the need for constant browser redirects.

These additional features can give the impression that Microsoft’s goal is to reinforce usage of its services through default settings that may press users into using Bing more frequently.

As an active Bing user, I intend to keep the Bing Wallpaper app, albeit with all unnecessary toggles deactivated except for the daily wallpaper refresh option. The inclusion of AI-generated images seems counterproductive to the app’s reputation for high-quality photography sourced from real photographers.

In conclusion, it’s somewhat disheartening to see a tech giant like Microsoft employ such aggressive tactics to drive usage of their services. A more subtle approach could ensure that users continue to engage with their products organically, as they have for decades.
