Atomfall offers players a variety of tools to enhance their journey through the desolate landscapes of northern England. One of the most useful tools at your disposal is the Metal Detector. This handy device allows you to unearth hidden caches filled with valuable loot, significantly aiding in your exploration.
The Metal Detector is not mandatory, but it is definitely beneficial to acquire early in the game. Using it is a quick and straightforward process, and it may uncover new quest opportunities, crafting resources, and other essential items. Below, we’ll outline where to find a Metal Detector in Atomfall, as well as how to utilize it effectively.
Locating a Metal Detector in Atomfall
Your quest for a Metal Detector begins in Slatten Dale, the first region you explore. Here, you will encounter several NPCs, particularly Nat and Molly. Molly has a Metal Detector available for trade; however, trading your hard-earned goods may not be necessary.

Instead of negotiating with Molly, a free Metal Detector can be found shortly after her location. Simply head south of her position to collect it without cost.

To find the Metal Detector, follow the path leading east from the Water Wheels until you reach a stream, then continue to the larger river where it converges—look for a small waterfall as a landmark. On a rock in the center of the pond, you’ll find the Outlaw’s corpse.

By looting this corpse, you’ll acquire an early, cost-free Metal Detector, which proves useful for the entirety of your gameplay.
Additionally, the map below from MapGenie highlights the locations of all known Metal Detectors within the game:
It’s also good to note that many traders throughout Atomfall, including Alf in Wyndham Village, typically offer Metal Detectors for sale should you require another.
Utilizing the Metal Detector in Atomfall
The Metal Detector is an automatically equipped tool, which simplifies the process of locating hidden items. As you approach areas rich in buried loot, the detector emits an identifiable beeping sound to indicate proximity.
Access your inventory to activate the Metal Detector, revealing a small dial with five illuminating lights. Progress slowly through the area until all lights turn red and the beeping intensifies—this signals that it’s time to dig!
If only one light shines on either side of the Metal Detector, it’s a directional hint indicating which way to orient yourself to get closer to the treasure.

When you dig, you could uncover a variety of valuable items, ranging from metal lunchboxes—collectibles in Atomfall—to caches filled with essential crafting materials or even new quest leads.
For a promising early-game objective, consider retrieving June’s Key from The Little Tea Room in Wyndham Village. This key unlocks June’s Lockbox at the Village Hall, leading you to intriguing quest developments and substantial loot.
