BABYMONSTER becomes the first 5th-gen group to have the biggest song debut with ‘SHEESH’, surpassing 1.7 million on Spotify Global Chart
On April 1, BABYMONSTER released their comeback single SHEESH from their first mini album, BABYMONS7ER. This single surpassed 1.7 million streams on the Spotify Global Chart, exceeding the 1.56 million streams of BTS’ debut song No More Dreams, which was released in June 2013.
On November 27, 2023, YG Entertainment announced the upcoming debut of their fifth-generation girl group with the release of their first pre-debut single, Batter Up. On April 1, 2024, the highly-anticipated rookie group, consisting of seven members (Ruka, Pharita, Asa, Ahyeon, Rami, Rora, and Chiquita), officially debuted with their EP, BABYMONS7ER.
In December 2022, YG Entertainment had announced the debut of a new girl group in 2023. However, due to the company’s ongoing negotiations with BLACKPINK throughout the year, the debut of the rookie group was postponed. Nevertheless, on November 27, 2023, the rookie girl group finally released their pre-debut single Batter Up, signaling their upcoming debut.
BABYMONSTER sets new record with SHEESH on Spotify Global Chart debut
The music video for SHEESH has currently amassed nearly 38 million views, along with over 131K comments from fans all around the world. As soon as news spread about their debut on a music program, BABYMONSTER’s followers expressed their excitement on social media.
SHEESH, the lead single from the seven-member group’s debut mini-album, blends elements of hip-hop and dance. The track perfectly combines lush synthesizer melodies with Renaissance-inspired piano compositions.
SHEESH, choreographed by renowned dancers Bada Lee and featuring innovative choreography, an infectious melody, and powerful lyrics, surpassed BTS’ debut track No More Dream on the Spotify Global Chart on April 2, 2024.
At the same time, Batter Up set two impressive new records as it climbed the ranks on both the iTunes and YouTube charts. The initial track from BABYMONSTER, which dropped on November 27, 2023, claimed the top spot on the global iTunes charts in 20 countries, including the Philippines, Peru, Malaysia, Chile, Argentina, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Singapore, and many others.
The music video for Batter Up received 22.59 million views in a single day, making it the most-viewed debut music video in K-pop history within the first 24 hours. Only 18 days after its release, it also became the quickest debut music video to surpass 100 million views on the site.
Furthermore, ASA, a member of the group, played a significant role in writing the song and has been recognized by the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) as the official composer and lyricist for Batter Up. ASA worked together with labelmates Lee Chan-hyuk of AKMU and Choi Hyun-suk of TREASURE on both the music and lyrics of the track.
Meet the Rising Stars: Introducing BABYMONSTER from YG Entertainment
The 2023 reality program, Last Evaluation, featured seven potential members who were set to debut as BABYMONSTER and chronicled their journey to being selected. Throughout the show, YG Entertainment founder Yang Hyun-suk sought the assistance of various individuals, such as AKMU’s Lee Su-hyun, Winner’s Kang Seung-yoon, and Lee Seung-hoon, to evaluate, grade, and determine the group’s formation.
The ultimate team was comprised of three South Koreans (Ahyeon, Rami, and Rora), two Japanese (Ruka and ASA), and two Thais (Pharita and Chiquita). Prior to this, the agency had trademarked “BABYMONSTER”and “Baemon”in both English and Korean in January 2020, which were among the many names initially proposed for BLACKPINK.
Despite Ahyeon’s absence due to health issues, the group’s pre-debut single Batter Up propelled them to success on Spotify. In just 10 days, they became the fastest-ever K-pop female group to reach 10 million streams. Ahyeon’s quick recovery and return to the group as a seven-member unit generated excitement among her fans, as she continued to support the team’s future endeavors.
The band’s debut extended play, BABYMONS7ER, was released on April 1, 2024, featuring re-recordings of their songs Batter Up and Stuck in the Middle with all seven members. The EP also included a track gifted by Charlie Puth. This marked the group’s official debut, following the release of Stuck in the Middle as a single on February 1, 2024.
The septet, known for their high-teen image that sets them apart from previous female performers of the label, maintains the uniquely captivating qualities of YG Entertainment.
In May 2024, BABYMONSTER is planning to embark on their inaugural fan meeting tour, which will visit five countries including Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, and Indonesia.
