Microsoft Enhances SQL Server Migration with Azure Arc
Microsoft has recently unveiled the General Availability (GA) of its continuous migration assessments for SQL Server, leveraging the capabilities of Azure Arc. This initiative is designed to streamline the migration process for organizations looking to transition their SQL Server workloads to Azure, simplifying commonly faced queries and challenges during migration.
Understanding Azure Arc’s Role
To provide context, Azure Arc allows businesses to apply Azure’s powerful cloud management and governance features to servers located beyond Azure’s ecosystem. This includes on-premises servers, workloads hosted on other cloud platforms, edge environments, and Kubernetes clusters. Essentially, Azure Arc enables centralized management of these external resources via the Azure portal, treating them as if they were directly part of Azure.
Streamlined Migration Planning
Microsoft acknowledges that planning a migration can be a complex task, particularly given the necessity to compare costs across various scenarios. Previously, the process often required manual entry of pricing data, which could lead to errors and repetitive work. The newly available GA aims to alleviate these issues, facilitating cost comparisons with just a few clicks.
Enhanced Assessment Experience
The revamped assessment interface provides organizations with immediate access to retail pricing for various Azure Savings Options, including:
- SQL Azure Hybrid Benefit (AHB)
- Windows AHB
- Reserved Instances
- Azure Savings Plans
This comprehensive assessment experience encompasses several Azure SQL destinations, such as:
- Azure SQL Database (DB)
- Azure SQL Managed Instance (MI)
- SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machine (VM)
Cost Transparency and Strategy Recommendations
The platform offers a thorough breakdown of costs based on compute and storage, with all pricing displayed in USD relevant to the West US region for consistency. Adjustments to assessment settings result in instant updates to costs, as savings have been precomputed.
In addition to presenting clear pricing, Microsoft now provides insights into recommended migration strategies along with multiple product offerings. They also emphasize their top choice with a “Recommended”tag, reducing potential confusion for organizations as they navigate their migration options.

Feedback and Future Improvements
These enhancements are designed to facilitate smoother migrations for businesses, and Microsoft encourages users to provide their feedback to further refine the platform. By continuously improving its tools and features, Microsoft aims to empower organizations to transition to Azure more effectively.
