In Avowed, players will venture into the Shatterscarp region, which is the third zone in the game. Here, adventurers will encounter various characters, including Chiko, who requires assistance with the Heart of Valor quest. Chiko informs you that her uncle, Keipo, has been in a melancholic state, prompting her to request your help in lifting his spirits through storytelling.
Successfully completing the Heart of Valor side quest offers players a range of rewards, including a new weapon, an armor set, and a distinctive trinket. However, the type of rewards varies based on players’ choices throughout the quest.
How to Trigger the Heart of Valor Quest in Avowed
As you enter the Thirdborn settlement, you will spot Chiko with an exclamation mark above her head, indicating the start of a quest. Engaging her in conversation, she will share her concerns about her uncle, Keipo, a once-great hunter, who has succumbed to despair.

Upon finding Keipo, he acknowledges that Chiko sent you but shows indifference toward your adventures. Instead, he requests a favor: to retrieve the Heart of the Leviathan from the Sand Sea Ruins, as he wishes to see it one last time.

Make your way to the eastern edge of Shatterscarp to locate the Sand Sea Ruins; however, you will discover that the entrance is locked. To gain access, head southeast from the entrance, ascend the stairs to the wooden platform, and drop into the opening to unlock it. Once inside, thoroughly explore the vast ruins to gather items—defeating a bear and navigating some traps will lead you to the Heart of the Leviathan.

Before leaving, activate a hidden button to unveil a secret room containing the Weathered Journal. You’ll discover that Keipo has not told the complete truth; he wasn’t the sole victor over the Leviathan.

As you exit, Chiko confronts you, revealing she has read the journal and that Keipo plans to grind the Heart of the Leviathan to create a poison. You can now decide whether to give the heart to Keipo or withhold it.
Should You Give the Heart of the Leviathan to Keipo?
Every decision players make during the Heart of Valor quest can lead to diverse outcomes. Keipo confesses he suffers from the Dreamscourge, expressing a desire to die on his own terms, rather than be seen as a monster.
Give Keipo the Leviathan Heart

If you choose to give the heart to Keipo, he will express gratitude and reward you with Umpara’s Spear +1. You may mention the Weathered Journal, prompting him to admit his misdeeds. You then face a choice: tell the truth to the Thirdborn community or keep it secret. As you depart, Chiko will be with Hajime and will inquire if you gave Keipo the heart.
Confirming this will lead to Chiko becoming incredibly upset, refusing to listen to your explanations, even if you reveal Keipo’s affliction. You can choose to give Hajime the Weathered Journal, allowing him to expose their hero’s truth to the community. If you disclose the truth, Chiko will be devastated by the revelation of her uncle’s true nature.
Don’t Give Keipo the Leviathan Heart

Choosing not to give the Heart of the Leviathan to Keipo and mentioning the Weathered Journal will result in him withholding the weapon as a reward, asking you to leave instead.
Following Chiko and Hajime’s entrance, players can opt to keep the Heart of the Leviathan or hand it over. Chiko will express joy at your choice not to give the heart and will reward you with the Stormdancer set, an exclusive medium armor. Once again, players can choose whether to reveal the truth about the Weathered Journal.
For the best outcome, consider not giving Keipo the heart and concealing the truth about his past. This approach allows players to secure all possible rewards while leaving the Thirdborn community blissfully unaware of their hero’s true nature.
- Engage with Keipo and acknowledge his desire to end his suffering.
- Decline to give him the heart and express regret.
- Bring up the Weathered Journal and Umpara only after refusing to hand over the heart.
- Ensure him that his secret will remain safe.
- Receive Umpara’s Spear +1.
- If you lack the journal, you can lie about not retrieving the heart to receive the weapon.
- Talk to Chiko and Hajime.
- Say “Let me hold onto it. I’ll take it far away and keep it safe”to retain the Heart of the Leviathan as a Trinket.
- When prompted if you have anything else, respond “[Lie] No, that was all.”
- Disclose the truth of his Dreamscourge.
- Collect the Stormdancer set.
By following these steps, players can achieve full rewards while maintaining the Thirdborn’s image of their hero. Even Kai will agree that this is the optimal outcome.
