Recently, a player of Avowed uncovered a playful Easter egg that pays homage to the beloved animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. This find highlights a growing array of references that players have identified in the game since its early access release.
Scheduled for launch on February 18, Avowed marks the return of Obsidian Entertainment’s role-playing games after a hiatus since 2019. Notably, players who invested in the $89.99 Premium Edition have been enjoying early access since February 13.
Among the early access players, Reddit user TrashPuppy97 shared their discovery of the light-hearted Easter egg, which amusingly references Avatar: The Last Airbender. In a document, it is stated that “the last market was hostile to cabbages, ”with a wish for better fortunes in Eora. This echoes the struggles faced by Cai in Avatar as he contends with continuous mishaps for his Cabbage Corp., often culminating in his distressed exclamation: “My cabbages!”
Abundant Easter Eggs and References in Avowed
This whimsical nod to Avatar: The Last Airbender is just one of many Easter eggs that players have discovered in Avowed, which is set within the same universe as the Pillars of Eternity series. The game is brimming with allusions to both Pillars of Eternity and its sequel, Deadfire. Additionally, fans have noted elusive references to several games that are not part of the Obsidian catalog, including the Mass Effect series, scattered throughout the game’s text and dialogues.
Initial reactions from players appear to be largely favorable, reflected in Avowed’s “Strong”rating on OpenCritic, which is based on an average score of 81 and an impressive 85% recommendation rate from reviewers. However, common critiques target the game’s conclusion, which many reviewers have described as lacking impact.
As the official launch approaches, it will be interesting to see whether player experiences align with critical perceptions. Avowed is poised to be the second major first-person RPG released in February 2025, following closely behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 from Warhorse Studios, debuting two weeks earlier.
