Avowed: Is Releasing Prisoner Ilora a Wise Choice? (Fort Cell)

Avowed delivers an expansive and immersive journey filled with engaging decisions. Early on, players will encounter Ilora, a captive character locked away in a cell within the starting fort. The choice to either liberate Ilora or leave her imprisoned marks one of the game’s pivotal narrative forks, leading to distinct consequences. This guide discusses the potential insights into whether you should free Ilora and outlines how to execute her rescue if you choose to do so.

Finding Ilora in Avowed

Pathway to Ilora's Cell in Avowed

Players will discover Ilora approximately two-thirds into the initial mission. A significant barrier of bramble needs to be cleared for passage, leading directly to her cell, located through a left door beyond the thicket.

Ilora's Exact Location in Avowed

Despite her confinement, Ilora’s reception is less than welcoming; she visibly recoils at the sight of the Godlike’s unique features. Her immediate critique of the Godlike’s association with the Adeyran Empire raises suspicions with Garryck, who is quick to imply that her honesty is questionable, suggesting that liberating her might be ill-advised.

Confronted with this dilemma, you must deliberate whether freeing Ilora is the right course of action. Ilora claims knowledge of a boat for escape, while Garryck warns that smugglers from Paradis have a reputation for deceit. What should your choice be?

To Free or Not to Free Ilora?

Decision Not to Free Ilora

Before you make your decision regarding Ilora’s fate in the fort, it’s crucial to mention the importance of saving your progress frequently. Avowed allows multiple save slots, giving you the opportunity to roll back from any unfavorable outcomes. Now, let’s delve into the possible results of deciding to either liberate or forsake Ilora.

The Consequences of Freeing Ilora

Choosing to Free Ilora

Choosing to free Ilora will undoubtedly upset Garryck. While the long-term implications of character relations remain unclear, we can discern the immediate narrative direction that follows this choice.

Once liberated, Ilora will join you for the remainder of the mission, aiding in the battle against the final boss, Steadman Ralke, with her pistol skills. This supplemental support can prove beneficial during challenging encounters throughout the quest.

After overcoming the boss fight, Ilora will guide you to her vessel, sparking a revealing dialogue among her, Garryck, and the Godlike. In a moment of reflection, Garryck tentatively admits his misjudgment regarding Ilora. She then departs with you towards Paradis, seemingly concluding her role in your adventure.

The Outcome of Not Freeing Ilora

Decision Not to Free Ilora

If you opt against freeing Ilora, you may assume her fate is sealed within her cell; however, she attempts to persuade you once more before you exit. Should you maintain your refusal, you will proceed through the rest of the mission solely accompanied by Garryck.

During your encounter with Steadman Ralke, Ilora unexpectedly reappears during your dialogue. If your Dexterity stat is two or higher, you will realize that she managed to escape her confines. Initially, it seems like you could reconcile with her through certain dialogue choices. Regrettably, Ilora chooses to wield her pistol against you.

Ilora's Pistol in Avowed

Upon overcoming both Ilora and Steadman Ralke, you can loot the Common Pistol from Ilora’s remains. This seems to be the only tangible reward for the decision not to free her. Nevertheless, her ship remains accessible at the mission’s conclusion, ready to transport you and Garryck to Paradis.

As of now, we continue to explore the main storyline of Avowed; thus, the long-term ramifications of liberating or imprisoning Ilora remain unclear. Should additional consequences arise, this guide will be promptly updated.

Steps to Free Ilora

How to Free Ilora

If you choose to free Ilora, you’ll need to select one of the following dialogue options during your interaction with her:

  • “Don’t worry. I believe you, and I want to help.”
  • “Let’s go find that key, Garryck.”

Following your selection, Ilora will inform you that the key to her cell is located in the Warden’s Room. To access this area, turn left at the barred door and navigate a stack of climbable crates. Note that the quest marker will mislead you; it points towards the barrier, not the key. Upon reaching the top, jump over a gap and destroy breakable crates to reveal a lootable backpack containing a Copper Skeyt inside a bucket.

From the backpack, ascend to the ledge indicated by the quest marker. Instead of making a left turn, go right to discover an Essence Potion on a corpse and a breakable section of the floor close by. Smash through this flooring to drop yourself into the Warden’s Room, where you’ll find the Interrogation Log upon a desk.

Location of Ilora's Key

Examining the log suggests that although Ilora may not be entirely truthful, her motives could be more earnest than Garryck initially presumed. Evidence hints at Ilora’s possible ties to the Paradisan resistance against the Adeyran Empire, which may clarify her actions. Make sure to loot the prominent chest in the corner of the chamber and retrieve the key attached to the wall near the exit.

Prior to unlocking Ilora’s cell, consider opening the adjacent cell on the left and crouch beneath the fractured wall to access it, where you’ll find Deerskin Gloves on a deceased individual.

Once you’ve acquired the key, proceed to unlock Ilora’s cell. Ultimately, it appears that freeing her is the most favorable decision—or at least the morally commendable choice. Additionally, players can acquire the common pistol soon thereafter within Avowed, rendering the advantages of leaving her behind rather marginal.
