Avowed presents several mechanics and gameplay elements that help new players navigate its universe. However, a common area of confusion revolves around breaking down gear for materials. For players looking to upgrade their weapons and armor at Camp, collecting the right materials is crucial.
While players can discover upgrade materials throughout the world, a more efficient method is to dismantle excess equipment. This guide will provide a detailed look at how to dismantle gear within Avowed for both PC and console players, along with the materials you can expect to obtain from various types of equipment.
How to Dismantle Gear in Avowed

To begin the process of dismantling gear, players should navigate to their character’s Inventory menu and locate a piece of equipment that is not currently equipped. It is important to note that only weapons and armor can be dismantled for crafting materials; items such as boots, gloves, rings, and trinkets are not salvageable.
Once you’ve selected the desired piece of equipment, check the bottom-right corner of your screen for the Break Down input.
- PC: Hold down the ‘R’ key to dismantle the gear.
- Console: Hold down the ‘X’ button to dismantle the gear.
If you inadvertently press the ‘R’ key or ‘X’ button without holding them down, the gear will instead be stored in your Party Stash.
Before dismantling, players can view the materials they will receive. By scrolling down in the item description, you’ll find a “Break Down”section that lists all upgrade materials obtainable from dismantling that specific piece of gear.
Dismantling Regular Weapons & Armor

When disassembling standard (non-Unique) weapons and armor, players will receive various materials that are applicable for upgrading both standard and Unique gear. The materials rewarded upon dismantling depend on the upgrade level of the item; the better the gear, the more materials you’ll receive.
Every piece of equipment that has been upgraded at least once will yield an Herb Material, essential for most gear upgrades. However, if the gear is high tier but remains at a +0 upgrade level, it will not provide an Herb upon dismantling.

Dismantling Unique Weapons & Armor

When players dismantle Unique equipment, they will receive materials specific to the gear type along with Adra, a resource solely used for upgrading Unique gear. While Adra can occasionally be found in the game world or as quest rewards, it is quite rare.
The most effective way to gather more Adra for upgrading Unique gear is to dismantle Unique items that you no longer need. While it may seem counterintuitive to destroy items that can’t be retrieved, it’s crucial to remember that Avowed contains a plethora of Unique items, making it unlikely you’ll utilize them all.
Each Unique item displays its quality classification (Common, Fine, etc.) directly beneath its name in the item description. The quantity of Adra extracted when dismantling relies on the gear’s upgrade level, as detailed below:
