In the realm of Avowed, players have the opportunity to create diverse builds tailored to their playstyle, relying on a wide array of unique weapons and armor. Among these choices, the Horsecutter sword stands out as an exceptional option for those who prefer aggressive melee combat.
While magic plays a significant role in Avowed, dedicated melee builds can be just as powerful. The Horsecutter acts as a pivotal weapon in such setups, and the good news is that you can acquire it relatively early in your adventure.
Where to Find Horsecutter
To locate the Horsecutter, head to the Emerald Stair, which is the second zone available after Dawnshore. You will need to confront a formidable Skeleton Lord, who wields the sword and resides in a cove along the southern coastline. Before you can claim Horsecutter, you must prove your combat prowess.
Engaging with the Skeleton Lord initiates a combat scenario where you’ll face off against his bodyguard, who will attack you and your party. After defeating him, be prepared for additional skeletons to emerge and join the fray. This encounter can become quite chaotic, particularly if you are playing on harder difficulty settings. Focus on eliminating archers and healers while directing your companions to manage the Skeleton Monks and other melee opponents.
Upon defeating all adversaries in the cove, return to the Skeleton Lord, and as a reward for your victory, he will grant you the coveted Horsecutter.
Assessing Horsecutter’s Effectiveness

The Horsecutter is a powerful two-handed sword known for its impressive damage output, combining regular and Stun damage effectively. This weapon comes equipped with two notable effects:

- Horsecutting Strokes: This move delivers substantial Stun damage with a full combo.
- Bleeding Slash: Attacks inflict additional Bleed Damage, enhancing its lethality.
With these unique abilities, Horsecutter is designed for rapid, aggressive attacks. To truly harness its potential, players should prioritize high Stamina and Attack Speed, allowing for quick Stun applications and Bleed effects.
It’s important to note that increasing Dexterity boosts your Attack Speed slightly, though returns diminish after five points. Thus, it may be wiser to focus on gear that enhances Dexterity rather than continuously allocating points in that attribute as you level up. Furthermore, Giatta, one of your companions in Avowed, possesses a skill that temporarily increases the team’s Attack Speed, making her an invaluable ally in combat.
