Avowed Gameplay Guide: Should You Assist the Oracle? (Dawntreader)

Initiating Dawntreader in Avowed

Avowed Pilgrim's Path - Dawntreader Map

Beginning the “Dawntreader”quest in Avowed is a seamless experience. The journey starts in the northern region, specifically at Pilgrim’s Path, which can be accessed by heading north from the northwestern part of Paradis. It’s advisable to follow the river along the western shore, veering inland around the ‘Strangleroot’ marker on the map.

As you ascend the hill towards Pilgrim’s Path, a group of Xaurips will obstruct your path through a narrow rock corridor. After neutralizing this threat, continue onward until you meet NPCs Kauia and Seegwin. Engage in conversation and make sure to select the following dialogue options:

  • “I’d like to see this temple for myself.”
  • “Don’t make me pull rank on you.”

Upon making these selections, you will gain access to the Eothasian Temple, officially triggering the “Dawntreader”quest, which centers around locating the Aedyran Expedition Team.

Essence Generator Puzzle Solution

None

After entering the temple, you’ll encounter the Essence Generator puzzle. If you’ve explored Dawnshore before, you’re likely familiar with the mechanism. The task is simple: throw the Electric Lily Seeds you find nearby at the generator boxes to activate them. Alternatively, if you’re wielding a weapon that generates Shock accumulation, this can also prove effective.

In the initial chamber, locate two Electric Lily Seed plants that can be used to power the Essence Generator. Be vigilant for orange shield symbols which indicate the presence of nearby Essence Generators leading to hidden rooms and valuable loot. Open the first secret chamber before progressing further into the temple.

The upcoming chambers primarily feature basic platforming challenges, interspersed with a couple of minor groups of Xaurips. Keep an ear out for audio cues indicating hidden loot caches.

Avowed Dawntreader Path

Approaching a chamber with a breakable wall near a pallet, don’t stress if you can’t break through the wall. Instead, dismantle the pallet and keep moving forward; there’s nothing useful behind that wall anyway.

Avowed Caedmon Healing

You’ll soon come across a character named Caedmon, who is in dire need of help. Assisting him with a potion could lead to future rewards later at the Aedyran Embassy.

After aiding Caedmon, proceed along the main pathway until you reach a long wooden bridge, where another Xaurip encounter awaits before arriving at the lair of Oracle Sargamis.

Obtaining the Splinter of Eothas – Avowed

Avowed Splinter of Eothas

Engaging with the Oracle Sargamis

Avowed Oracle Sargamis

Upon your first meeting with Sargamis, he will claim ignorance regarding the whereabouts of the Expedition Team. When you inform him about their search for a relic, however, he will promptly mention that it surely must be the Splinter of Eothas the Aedyrans sought.

Sargamis, a Godlike of Eothas, reveals his own need for this relic but admits he cannot retrieve it. When he urges you to collect it, he cryptically states that the large figure in their chamber is not just a statue but something more significant, leaving the exact purpose vague.

Regardless of your intention to assist Sargamis, acquiring the relic is worthwhile as it opens various narrative paths later within the mission.

Retrieving the Relic

Avowed Path to Relic

Follow the quest marker from Sargamis’s workspace into a corridor leading to the relic. Expect to confront two significant groups of Xaurips and spiders along the way.

Avowed Relic Chamber

Eventually, you’ll arrive at a large chamber, with a smaller room at the back that houses the Splinter of Eothas. To your left lies a treasure chamber secured by two Essence Generator locks. The first generator is located on the wall of the relic chamber; turn left when facing the relic shrine to find it.

Avowed Essence Generator

To access the second generator, head beneath the main platform by the door to the treasure chamber. You’ll find a crack in the back wall which reveals the second generator hidden within.

Avowed Godless Executioner

Upon obtaining the relic, you’ll be confronted by a large number of skeleton enemies, including the formidable Godless Executioner. This boss behaves similarly to the skeleton paladins, known for their powerful overhead strikes. Prioritize eliminating the skeleton priest for healing support to other adversaries.

Finding the Expedition Team

Avowed Ice Eye Shoot

After dispatching of the enemies, exit the main relic chamber only to discover that the area is flooded. To your left, spot the plant that generates ice when shot, hanging from above. Trigger this plant to create an ice platform, allowing access to a previously unreachable Essence Generator treasure room.

Avowed Dantreader Switch

Continue along the main route until you find a small room filled with wires leading to three switches atop an easel. The bottom left and center switches are traps; press the bottom right switch instead. This grants you entry to Sargamis’ workshop, revealing the deceased members of the Aedyran Expedition Team. Evidence suggests that the Oracle murdered them to harness their essence for the statue of Eothas.

Avowed Gjedas Journal

Collect Gjeda’s journal from one of the fallen bodies, then return to confront Sargamis.

Help or Eliminate the Oracle Sargamis? – Avowed

Once you have the Splinter of Eothas and Gjeda’s Journal, it’s time to face off against Oracle Sargamis. Upon your return, he will try to persuade you that the deaths of the team were necessary for Eothas’s resurrection, proposing a convoluted plan for redemption of the God, who is infamous for his destructive past.

Ultimately, you will need to decide whether to aid Sargamis in his mission or confront him in pursuit of one of the top weapons in Avowed.

Assisting the Oracle Sargamis

Avowed Place Splinter Here

Should you choose to help Sargamis, brace yourself for an extensive exposition before proceeding to climb the platforms surrounding the construct to place the Splinter of Eothas at the center wheel.

Avowed Oracle Pull Lever

Following this action, engage with the Oracle to pull the lever on the wall, releasing essence into the construct. However, the ensuing cutscene reveals Sargamis’s failed experiments, leading him to propose that your soul might be the missing element required.

Consenting to his request will result in your character’s demise, triggering the ‘Into the Beyond’ death screen. Attempting to escape the machine prematurely will render Sargamis hostile towards you.

Avowed Dawntreader Godlike Killed

Alternatively, you could try to persuade Sargamis against continuing this path. The Court Auger character can provide unique dialogue options for this route, although, as of now, it appears that this path yields no significant benefits or consequences for Sargamis.

Defeating the Oracle Sargamis

While some may favor the notion of redeeming Sargamis, both the narrative and gameplay suggest that punishing the Oracle for his heinous actions is the superior choice. You can initiate combat as soon as you return from retrieving the relic, but a more nuanced approach offers poetic justice.

Follow the initial steps as if you were cooperating with him: place the Splinter of Eothas in the construct and pull the lever. During his request for self-sacrifice, instead argue that he must be the one to sacrifice himself to revive Eothas.

Avowed Oracle Sacrifice Self

Utilize these dialogue choices:

  • “The chime of an unknown godlike wouldn’t interest Eothas. It has to be you.”
  • “Eothas didn’t keep me alive for 600 years. It has to be you.”

This will mise en place Sargamis to stand beneath the animancy machine, allowing you to press the button from the upper level, ultimately leading to his demise.

Avowed Last Light of Day

Once Sargamis falls, ensure you loot the Last Light of Day +2 from his remains. This weapon not only stands out as one of the top early-game options, but many also regard it as the finest weapon throughout the game.

Should You Offer the Body to the Voice?

After your encounter with the Oracle, the voice in your consciousness will prompt you to contemplate ceding the body to them. There’s little clarity regarding the potential implications of this choice. Agreeing seemingly influences later developments, while refusing provokes an angry reaction.

Ongoing discoveries are being made regarding the long-term repercussions of such a decision. Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
